Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Great thread I am thinking about this over the $500 aluminum ones that mount in the bed.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Ok Guys. I went to the yard today and picked up a new license plate holder. It came off a 92 Caprice (old cop car). Works awesome. Thanks for the heads up on this one. Here are some pics and a shot of the tank from up my driveway and from the side.

Well I was right about the model of car but wrong on the year model. Glad it worked out for you. Looks like the tank swap in general turned our very nice!

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Any idea on using this setup on a chrome bumper? I'd hate to fork over the $$ for chrome and then cut a hole in it.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

The 69 Camaro fuel sending unit is the same ohms as our trucks so just buy the stock sending unit for the 69 Camaro and your stock gauge will work. Make sure to look at your setup before ordering tho. Some sending units had two tubes coming out.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

This looks like an awsome mod, can you show more detail on how you fabed up the straps?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

The straps were the hardest part for me. I just laid the tank down and made bends in the strapping until they were right. Took a bit of trial and error but turned out good. Once I got the bends right I shot a coat of paint on them. No worries.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Matt (or anyone else that has done this install). Approximately how far from the end of the frame is the fuel cap? I have everything to do this install now, but I don't have a rear bumper to use for mock up. By looking at your picture (see below) it looks like the fuel cap is either right in line with the end of the frame, or maybe just a little beyond it, can you clarify?

I just went out and measured. Mine is about 5 inches out from the frame. I measured from the end of my frame to the lip of the fill tube. I would get a beater bumper and put it on before you do the mock up. It may save you some headache later. Kepp me posted on your build.

Thanks,
Matt

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Thank you for measuring. I went ahead and mocked my tank up just to get an idea how everything goes together...I hope to buy a step side bumper next weekend at the Fort Worth Goodguy's show. Thanks again.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Are your exhaust pipes too close to the gas tank and how long have you had the exhaust next to the tank?

I thought they may have been but the exhaust shop said it wasn't an issue. I have driven with them like that for over a year.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Very slick design and execution. I really like how it preserves the integrity of the stepside bed and fenders.

One hesitation for me would be how low the tank hangs. I guess I could be convinced if I saw a few stock OEM applications with a low hanging tank -- other than the Pinto ;-) .

Just thinking out loud... I wonder if an early Mustang tank, the smaller 16 gallon one, would work to minimize the hangdown??? http://jniolon.classicpickup.com/mus...ustangtank.htm

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Early Mustang...'64 1/2 thru '73...has the fill pipe coming out of the top of the tank and then curving upward to the taillight panel, beneath the lock on the trunk lid.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I really like this idea with the 69 camaro tank....I even have one in my possesion ( I restored a 69 camaro 4 years ago). Do you have any issues with the gas being pulled up with a stock fuel pump or are you using a elect. pump?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

I'm running the stock mechanical fuel pump and haven't had a problem with it.

Thanks for your response Slider.....my truck isn't lowered, so I don't think there will be any clearance problems either. Your truck is WAY cool by the way !

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

67Slider,

I followed your pics and installed a 69 Camaro gas tank with a flip license plate. It works great but is very hard to put gas into it - it backups with the slightest pressure from the gas hose. Are you experiencing this problem?

Thanks

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

No. I have filled mine on full blast at the pump. The only time it ever shut down was one pump I had to angle the pump nozzle slightly because it was at an odd angle and made the gas splash back. Try twisting the nozzle 15 or 20 degrees to either side and see if that helps.
