Truck/Blazer Console questions on Repair and Repops

I have searched the forums and google and really havent found the answers I have been looking for.

I am in the process of putting together the 69-72 style buckets for my 68 C10. I picked up a console that is in pretty good shape minus a huge hole in the side near the rear on the upper piece where it meets the lower. I have seen repair threads and videos for smaller holes and cracks but nothing for a large chunk missing. Has anyone made a patch to fix a missing chunk? I know I am gonna have the texture issues, but this is really the only thing really wrong with it and it should be saveable, jut at a loss on how best to repair it.

With that chunk having me buffalo'd, while searching I looked at the seatbelt buckle style reproduction consoles and pondered those with how crazy expensive originals are going for now. Pic is of what online ads show. I cant seem to find a picture of this style in actual use. The main concern I have is if the top area is the same size so you could add all the trim to make it look more presentable than a block of plastic.

Could you post a photo of the damaged console? It may help us visualize what you're up against. Who knows maybe someone's got the piece you need just taking up space in their garage.
You also might watch some plastic welding and dash repair videos. You might gain some insight as to how to move forward.
Good luck and let us know how repair goes.

The originals are a sort of fiberglass. You should be able to get some resin and some cloth to repair and skim with Bondo to try your luck with texturing.

This is the hole I am dealing with. I figured I was gonna have to cut to a clean area to the patch once I strip off the bucket of paint someone sprayed on this. I mainly picked it up as the lid is in super shape as well as the trim ring.

This should work . That corner always gets broken / cracked when 2 people try to sit in the passengers seat .

Re: Truck/Blazer Console questions on Repair and Repops

it depends upon your goals for the truck and what you use your console for. If the truck is a daily driver that you don't plan to restore, and the console is just a place to keep your stuff then a repop is fine.

But if you have any plans whatsoever for your truck and you like originality, trust me, you will be immensely disappointed by the repops. Ask me how I know. I have a couple and I do plan to add some bling to them to make them a little nicer but I'd rather have an original with a chunk missing, frankly.

Since these are not made of plastic, acetone is your best option, it will melt that paint off and leave the console intact, then you will know what you are dealing with. I am fixing a couple up right now with fibreglass that I usually use on boats. The chunk you have missing will not be that visible when installed, so give it a try.

X2 on using acetone for paint removal, it will strip it to the bare fiberglass.
