kept putting it off

After months of watching gas gauge bounce all over and "Low Fuel" light coming on I finally installed new fuel pump. Friend let me use his lift to drop the tank. Took 2 hours and no big issues. Replaced filter at same time. After reading other post I bought Delphi brand. When I pulled filler hose off tank I wasn't expecting to see another tube inside it. Part of vent system I guess. I know some say to lift the bed and a few others cut thru the bed to access pump. I didn't think it was that bad droping the tank. This was on a 2001 Silverado.

Depends on the area of the country.
If you run the fuel low and have a lifting support for the tank it shouldn't be too bad.

You're in California the land of no rust.

In the rust belt I usually pull the bed rather than disturb the tank mounts and other stuff too much. There's a lot less stuff to disturb taking the bed off.

I pushed a hard start too long and too far. Fuel pump died on me while towing another truck. Props to you for preventive repair!

I did drop the tank as well, in my driveway. Bed was way too rusty to risk pulling it and breaking all the bolts holding it on. Kinda wish I cut a hole in the bed but there was a plastic bedliner in the way. I had to install a new filler neck anyways.

Another protip, the clip nuts for the straps can't take much abuse. Snapped one putting the tank back in, new Dorman one too. Oh well it's in.

I pulled the body and bed bolts out so I could slobber never seize on them when I brought my rig here from Nevada.

It all depends on the rust levels and how much prep you did when they could be easily pulled out.

Dorman... Says it all. Not as bad as Broke When Delivered but almost as bad.

I bought a New England truck I knew what I was getting into.

Bed's a goner anyways, holes rotted right thru the floor and most of the bed rails gone. Only 16 years old and 160k on it.

I will be checking GM to see if I can still get the clip nuts.

Sure would be nice if fuel pumps would last longer. So stupid to put a fuel pump in the gas tank and at the same time make it a super cheap design that cant make 150k miles. Always with the scams. I am trying to remember how it went when I did mine on my 2000 suburban a few years back. I was able to get it to the parking lot at work. Of course it had at least 20 gallons in it. I was quoted $800 at a nearby shop to replace it. Lol. I went to napa and paid $330 for the same chinease pump that you can get for $60 on Ebay. The napa employee smiled at me when he quoted me the price. No joke. They sure do know how to make a profit. Took me probably 3 hours to change pumps. I remember it was a pain in the ass to unhook everything on top of the tank and to let it down with a floor jack. And when I got it back together, I only had the front strap holding it up because the back strap was rusted out and broke while removing it. So I used a ratchet strap to hold the back up and ordered a new strap that I later installed. So it's not a fun job but definitely very doable from underneath.
