Cooling issues!!

Hey guys! Gotta cooling conondrum going on with my 350 swapped S10. It runs over 200 degrees most of the time, so i replaced the thermostat wuth 165 degree unit, and still having issues. At this point im thinking i need to swap the radiator, and probably the electric fans(which i picked up at the junkyard, and are probably ready to crap the bucket). Is there anything else i could or should try before replacing the rad and fans?

Re: Cooling issues!!

For a stock 350, a 195 tstat is standard. This will give a running temp of 205~215. Assuming your gauge is accurate, sounds like things were working as designed.

The temp rating on a tstat is the point where it begins to open. Operating temps will be 10~20 higher. With your 165, you should see 175~185 on the gauge.

Might verify your temps with a 2nd source like a laser reader. Possible the current gauge/sender combo is off.

Re: Cooling issues!!

Are you running a heater? If not you should run a bypass hose from the intake to the water pump.

Re: Cooling issues!!

A little more info..

Does it keep creeping up above 200 degrees?
You said "most of the time." Does it do it when idling or on steady highway speed?

It goes up steadily, if im cruising along above 35, itll stay about 200, but in traffic, it goes up, and doesnt cool down til i stop and cut it off.

Re: Cooling issues!!

Re. staying steady at constant 35mph but overheats in traffic. I had a similar problem in my 68 with 250 six.

First thing I did was replace lower radiator hose. Mine was original.

Next I made sure the fan clutch was okay and stiffened up when engine at operating temperature. It was good.

I replaced the radiator cap and tested the t-stat in boiling water to make sure it was opening all the way. Still ran hot in traffic.

To fix it, I replaced single row for a double row radiator and installed an overflow tube. Been running normal since.

Re: Cooling issues!!

What radiator are you using? Factory 4.3 radiator or an upgraded unit?
