These are the same specks that He is doing for me. So I don't see a problem if they can pull over 800 HP.

Re: SBC Stroker Build Parts

A rod to stroke ratio of 1.69 will help ring and cyl wall longevity , but the tight ring pack and likely the pin being into the oil ring groove are race piston territory.

If this builder really wants to "do something different" then a 396 or 408 would suit a truck much better , ( both use a 350 block), a 407 to 421 would be even better.

Is this a "race only" truck ?

ok, so let's help you see the problem but if I were you, i'd put a 'stop work' on this until you have a better idea of exactly what you're getting. there seem to be a lot of smart folks on here so hopefully they'll weigh in too.

What do you use the truck for, and what do you want out of this engine for $5K? Is it a dedicated race truck? are you going to spray? do you tow? gears? trans?

What your GETTING is a pretty expensive engine that is going to make around 375+ HP at pretty high RPM and be gutless in the bottom end. It's going to require premium fuel and a big torque converter to prevent surge, as well as a DP carb and probably a single-plane intake. I suspect it's not going to last more than about 30K miles before it starts blowby, and it's going to be a bear to tune for the street. it's basically a hotrod/mild race engine...and even with that, it's a pretty odd combo as myself and others have said. if this is what you want, great - if not, then I would take a hard look at the parts you already have and figure out how to use what you have to get what you want.

or you can just tell me to shut up and I'll go away, no harm no foul

I agree DBD!!
It's awesome he's letting someone experiment with his cheque book!
At least he might have a bunch of reusable parts for his next real engine build.
Oh well!!
Each to his own!!

The 800hp number you referenced is just the number before those parts become the weak link, NOT the number the engine will make.

I have been biting my tongue as well, but I do hope that you are happy with both the end result (engine that you get) and the $ you spent on it.

Re: SBC Stroker Build Parts

Sounds to me just like an old racer that thinks a stock reground crank and a few tricks that were spilled back in 1996 when Al Gore invented the internet are going to win him a heat race at the local roundy round. Nothing wrong with it, but there have been a lot of advances in the last 30 years since those tricks actually worked. It will still make power, sure, but HP per $$$ is where most of these guys on the board are trying to direct you. I've been on the other side of the fence too though... Nothing is worse than some internet wanna-be HP god who read a few magazines and forum posts trying to tell your customer what engine choices to make. Going through that now with a 383 build for a friend that I know makes 500 horsepower. Told him "look, either I build this engine for you, or I don't"... Talk to 10 different professional engine builders and you'll get 10 different engine combinations too... Can't win.

Re: SBC Stroker Build Parts

I guess long as your please in the end is what counts

I cant see doing a "stroker" thats only a 371? for about 2k less you could just to a lq9 with a cam some mild heads work and make 400+ hp and a way better engine, I have a stroker 383 with close to 10k invested and I have a 04 silverado with a stock 6.0 (lq4) my 87 stroker ran 13.3 my stock 6.0 runs 13.9 swap was way way less funds..........

6.0 is better MPG more reliable and keep in mind it stock have not touched it (yet) ......Yup I learned the hard way

Re: SBC Stroker Build Parts

I concur with some of the comments above. 5.7" rods would work well for that combo. Even 6.0" rods means using oil rings that aren't 100% supported by the piston. 6.125" is nuts for anything less than a 3.875" stroke, especially since the amount of power supposedly gained with longer rods is negligible.

Sounds like this is more of a circle track engine than one for your truck!

I'd also like to know more about the crankshaft. I don't like the idea of offset-grinding a 350 crank with 2.10" rod journal down to 1.98".

Your builder's "secrets" would turn me off big time.
