Re: the ignition started to smoke a little bit

Do you have an electronic ignition?

I do, and once the wires coming out the side of my dizzy had gotten old, the insulationing became brittle, then I smoked the control module in it. Quick trip to A-Z and $14 and I was back on the road.

Re: the ignition started to smoke a little bit

Fortunately, mine happened in my driveway!

Does yours run now? You said the ignition smoked, did you see the source? If not I'd pop the dizzy cover and look. My typical luck would be it would quit half way to work when it's raining.

Do you have an electronic (HEI) distributer?

Re: the ignition started to smoke a little bit

i think he's talking ignition switch.
These switches are known for this.
Go to napa and get some dielectric grease. You can byt a tube, or for just a buck or so they should have the one time use packet.
Lay down with a light looking up at the bavck of the ignition switch, You'll nee what needs to be done to unplug it. once you have it off of there, look at the connection, you'll probably find one kinda melted.
If it is just a little melted, then just put the grease stuff into all the femail sides of the connection (harness side) and it should be good.
If it looks pretty bad, then you'll need to replace the plug.

Re: the ignition started to smoke a little bit

To piggy back on to #6, if the plug is "a little melted", get a new plug. You can get a new plug from one of the many suppliers that support this site.

Once you have the new plug in hand, you can remove the wires from the old one with a little flat blade screwdriver. You need to push the wire in from the back of the plug, depress the little tab on the metal contact, and pull the wire out of the plug. If the wire looks good just plug it in the correct hole on the new plug.

If the wire is fried, I'd cut it back to where it is good again and make a good soldered connection with a shrink wrap cover over it.

I repaired my ignition switch a few years ago like above and never had another problem.

If this was my truck, and I cared about it, I'd disconnect the battery until I got myself a new plug AND switch installed.
