What are you going to do about the extra pedal?

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

You will need to have the drive shaft shortened. Will need an auto flex plate and auto starter. Shift linkage for trans, TV cable, longer speedometer cable and correct drive and driven gears for the trans so speedo will work correctly.

Ha!
When I swapped out my 3-speed manual for a th350, I drove around for a couple of years with an extra pedal.

When I finally looked under there it was laughingly simple to remove.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

The TV cable is the Throttle Valve cable that goes from the 700R4 to your Carb. Its very important that it is set up correctly so you don't kill your trans.

Where are you gonna hook up your trans cooling lines? And take Rock's advice about the TV cable VERY seriously.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

You may need a special adapter for the throttle shaft on the carb. Most 700R4 transmissions were from fuel injected vehicles. The carb. link will not allow Wide open throttle pressure to the trans. This will toast it pretty quickly. I purchased the adapter from Bowtie overdrives. It is fully adjustable which is a unique feature. Chec them out. There are a couple other companies who offer similar brackets. My 72 blazer went from undrivable on long trips to a cruiser . It runs about 2300 rpm at 70 in lockup mode.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

700r4's came out in '82. Fuel injection introduced in '87. 4l60e introduced in '93 so going by years produced, nearly half were behind carbureted engines. I used to rob all of the tv cable brackets I could find on carb'ed vehicles in the wrecking yard. At one time you could buy the bracket for a 700r4/ 200 4r over the counter at GM. I'm not sure if that is still the case or not. Aftermarket has it covered anyway. TV cable adjustment is extremely important. I have a 700r4 in y barn that was supposedly rebuilt and burnt up in less than a day due to a Lokar cable being bound up (according to P.O.) I picked it up for $75 as a core.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

got the 700 R4 in and drove it yesterday around the block, had the drive line rebuilt and shortened (measured diference in transmission length) and installed it and it was too long still, CORRECT WAY TO MEASURE EVERYTIME is from the end of the out put shaft of transmission to the center of the bolt holes on the carrier bearing bracket on the truck, had to learn this from driveline services in Portland, luckily they are 15 mins from my house. also 3 speed manual driveline had same spline as 700 r4 output does. now need the TV bracket for carb !

You must heed the warning the other guys have given you about the TV cable. Driving the truck without it connected and properly adjusted will burn up your transmission in a heart beat. Checkout http://www.tvmadeez.com/ for brackets and a cable that will work with your set up.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

It was appx 3 1/2". The difference in the transmission lengths 3 Speed manual vs 700r4 was 2 1/4" I added 1/4" to make the first cut off the driveline 2 1/2", got it home and it was still too long, I measured the end of the 700r4 tailshaft (installed in truck) to the center of the carrier bearing mount on the truck (as instructed by the guys at driveline services) and that was 33", they had to cut another " off the driveline as mine was still 34" (front half of driveline)

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

I am starting to get my list of parts needed to do a 3 speed on the column to a 700R4 on this 67.

I plan on getting most of it from Bowtie Overdrives.com

They also have the correct TV cable to work with the Ram Jet 350 engine

I ordered the automatic column from CPP the other day

Sounds like you are doing this right! The 700 behind a RamJet is a great combo.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

Now I've seen a lot of guys put tilt inside there trucks. If the truck is not driven very much. Then its fine but when the truck is really used Tilt becomes a pain in the BUTT.What is the one thing that you use to pull your self inside your truck on the drivers side. Now for you thine guys that weigh 150 pounds this dose not apply to you.But us guys that are 190-300 pounds and are 5'10 and above we really pull on the steering wheel to haul are Fat ass into the truck. That column bolts get offly lose.then the wheel starts bouncing to ever pot hole in the road.

For those of us that are 300+, tilt is a must to fit behind the wheel.

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

one more question...what speedometer cable do I need.. i almost have this swap finished.
the inner cable is too small and will not fit the 700r4, would a speedo cable from a th350 c10 work?? this was a 3spd manual truck

Re: 3 spd manual swap out for tilt/700r4

A th350 cable will work, you just need to know what length you need.

Use a rope or wire and run it the way you will run the speedo cable to get the length you need.
