Ready to go 1 Ton/K5

After getting the crossmembers sandblasted and painted, I am thinking about doing it to the 1 ton axles. Plan on a complete rebuild of both before install, so sounds like a plan. Going to go with POR-15 or ? eventually here, so might as well clean them up right eh? Comments?

Yeah, gonna talk to the blast shop this week. The 1 ton axles just laying there in the garage, thinking I need to have them blasted first, primered, and then POR-15. Will tear off the calipers, etc., first, any thoughts?

Setting up some sawhorses in the garage to prep these axles for install. Parts are in R&D stage, but soon moving to purchase dept!

Had an interesting propostion presented to me recently. Guy that runs a auto & truck repair/wrecker service 2 doors up from me offered his shop free to work on my project. Only problem is I need to purchase all the necessary stuff to get these axles setup for the install. He has everything needed, as in welders, air power, etc. This guy is really into wheeling and just wants to see my K5 back out and about. He has many 4x4's including a school bus made into a monster truck, 4x4 wrecker, etc. Thinking about taking him up on his offer, just need the cash to get started! Guess I had better sweet talk some more to the "banker/wife"!

Talked to the banker and she said no problem, just come up with the money! Gotta love this woman, as she also loves this K5, "almost" as much as I do! Still looking hard at the Blackbird rear brake setup for the 14 bolt. So far no responce from anyone running this conversion kit. Gonna buy one as soon as funds are available, and I will post up! Anybody got pic's or tips for me on a rear disc conversion setup? Really looking at the flexible rubber brake hoses used here, etc?

POR-15 should go on before the primer. You might be talking about their POR prep. Its designed to go on bare metal. If you put something between it and bare metal it will only be as effective as what is underneath it. It is UV sensitive and should be top coated if concerned with appearence. I guess it has no effect on its preventive qualities it just fades or what not. It will bond with the metal, I tried sandblasting some of off a car last summer and it was alot more difficult to remove than regular paint, rust, ect.

I was reading this and thought you were going to prime your axles and then coat them with POR15. Don't worry about it.

I got my rig up on 4 jackstands right now and tore it apart..does that count?

Winter ta-do list:
Swap out leaky oil pan gasket, bought a fancy 1-piece to replace old-school 3 piece. Oh and my oil cooler is leaking a bit, clean & repair. Got too peak at my crank and see the cylender walls for the first time sence I installed the 454. Still looks nice and "fresh" up there Paint the pan & X-member while it's out. I love spray paint!
Rear diff fluid swap & add DIY Guardsman pinion skid plate.
Pass-side front U-bold swap, old used & too short for new better fitting Ubolt.
H1 wheels are showin rust were the welded insert touches the wheel on the opposite side of the weld Adding POR-15 to that "crack/groove" to seal it for good! I love POR just don't gett that stuff on your skin, it has to wear off, it won't wash off for nothin!
PSC gearbox leak One of the male connecters for the ram has developed a leak. I am affraid it may bee the weld that holds the fitting into the gear box, I haven't got that far yet.
I'll roll around under my rig for quite some time and just look for stuff, this also helps me remeber how & what I did over the years, tighten & clean stuff up...rolling around on a creeper with beer is fun! hahah until the wife yells at me for being in the grarage "all Day" damn woman! Ha! Cheeper to keep her right! hehe J/K

Well, I have made a decision to take my bud 3 doors up on his offer. Went up and checked out his new tube bender, and some custom bumpers he's been welding up. Nice stuff. He's also putting together a custom 4 link for his glass-bodied jeep. Hmm, welders, plasma cutter, hoist, I've gotta go for it while the offer stands, bring in my rig, work on it in our free time, no charge for shop use, except for raw material cost, how can I go wrong? Picking up a set of used 8 lug wheels/with decent rubber from him so I can make a roller of it when I swap the 1 tons in.

Sure is Burt! Just bought some top u-bolt plates for the 60. Gotta find some u-bolts for the rear 14 blt. Think I'm going to have to get some new spring perches to help with pinion angles. Oh and don't worry, there will be plenty of pic's coming! Any time to work on your's?

Oh no! I just went and did it! Bought up the Blackbird rear disc setup for my 14 bolt! I thought I was addicted to this resto, but now I know for sure, I AM!

Wow, went to the blessing of the JEEPS yesterday, what a event! Thousands of jeeps everywhere. Mud bog, obstacle courses, swap meet, vendor displays, all that and more! Not a lot of full size rigs and no 1st gen K5's there, but a whole lot of 4 wheeling people, real nice event. Going to a offroad park today to ride along with a buddy and check it out. I'll take the camera along and take some pic's. Park is only about 20 miles from my house and I have never been there, think it's about time. Oh, I am getting the K5 out of storage this week also, so a new build thread to start real soon! I am really excited about this and can't wait to get started!

Ended up staying home all day. Will hook up with buddy tomorrow and get K5 out of storage barn this week. 350 motor has not been started in 10+ plus years, so have to do it right! Any tips on firing it up proper?

For starters pull the plugs and shoot some penetrating oil in each cylinder and let it sit maybe over night, then with the plugs pulled you can hit the starter and get it to turn over and prime the oil. Might want to then drain the oil and put in fresh with new filter. You might even pull the distributor and prime the oil with a primer tool and drill before hitting the starter to turn the motor over. Of course start with some fresh gas in the tank and some starter spray in the carb when your ready to try to fire it up would be wise.

Thank's for the tips YJ! Man, went crazy buying stuff this weekend. Ordered up the shackle flip, cross-tied shackles, disc conversion kit for the 14 bolt rear, u-bolt plates for the dana60 frt, new weld on spring perches for the rear, proper pitman arm for my soon to be high steer-crossover setup, 32 lug nuts for the cheap set of stock 8 lug wheels and tires I picked up to make it a roller for now, must have forgot something! Still need to find a set of u-bolts for the 14 bolt rear. Gonna get a hold of my bud and get it out of storage this week!

Just got back from the shop. Looks like friday night were gonna take the rollback wrecker out to the storage barn and bring it in. I am pumped! Charging up the video camera battery now!
