Re: Brakes 66 chevy truck

If you were going with 5 on 5 it would have been easy. Since 5 on 4 3/4 is a passenger car bolt pattern, you'll need to look at drums for a Camaro, Chevelle, Impala, etc. The issue you may run into is finding a drum that will match up to your backing plate. You might be better off to just swap the whole differential.

Re: Brakes 66 chevy truck

As the others mentioned, the drum brakes make it a bit difficult to change the lug pattern on the rearend. I have a passenger car 10-bolt rear end (5 on 4.75) available that will need rebuilding - it's free, just cover shipping. That might be an easy way to solve the rearend lug pattern issue. PM me if you're interested.

As far as the front goes, I had to re-drill my rotors for the 5 on 4.75 pattern (see photo below).

Didn't those come with a 7.5 or 8.2 10 bolt rear end? Just go easy on it.

Is redrilling the front rotors the only option for switching to 5 on 4.75 and if so what rotors would be best to do? I looked a redrilling the factory rotors but got scared as it looked like it would compromise the integrity of the cast rotor.

They are either 7.5 or 7.625.....not the best diff IMO. Depends on how much HP or TQ you have. It would work if you don't hammer on it much. A better choice would be of course a 12 bolt or a 8.5 10 bolt.

Re: Brakes 66 chevy truck

Well the main reason i wanted to change the rear to 5 on 4 3/4 is the rims i want to put on the truck. There are the Billetspecialties street light. They only make the 5 on 5 size 15 by 14 and up.I know where i can get some axles that are drilled for 5 on 5 and 5 on 4 3/4.I did not want to put that wide of a rim on back.

i've been running a 1980 camaro rearend (rebuilt)for 10 yrs now, and been putting over 500hp to it ever since with a mini spool in it with no problems running high 12s with drag radials. in may i had it narrowed 3" and went with some better axels. i say run it

My fault I wasn't more specific....I was thinking 3rd gen Camaro as in 1982 and newer. If I'm not mistaken a rear end out of a 1980 Camaro would be a 8.5 10 bolt. Those are a pretty tuff rear end, much more so than the 7.5 and 7.625. I just haven't had good luck with the 3rd gen rear ends, nor have I heard much good about them. I just hate to see someone go to all the work of swapping to a rear end only to have it grenade on them.

I've had to re-drill countless wheels and rotors for other lug patterns for many years, and I've never had any issues. Many of the drag racers used to drill the magnesium wheels with three different lug patterns in the 60s and 70s with no problems. I figure the rotors are a lot more substantial.

The only other option that I could figure was going with passenger car components, and I did not want to go with lighter weight stuff.
