Wider stock 8 lug wheels ???

Converting a 71 C20 from the 16.5 wheels to 16 inch wheels. I found a pair of stock chevy steel wheels that are 16 inch x 6.5 wide with 4.5 backspace.

I would like to find something 7.5 to 8 inches wide for the back, is that a common boneyard item or am I just likely to find more 6.5 wides ??? Any thoughts ? Thanks

I think 6.5 is it, remember ford, doge, chevy 8 lugs are all the same, so don't limit your search too much!!

Re: Wider stock 8 lug wheels ???

Older Chevy/GMC wheels were 16x6", then they went to 16x6.5". Older Ford/Dodge wheels were 16x7". The only stock GM type of wheel that's actually wide would be the ones below, but they're 16.5x9.75", 12" wide from lip to lip. There was also a 16.5x8.25" wheel made but I've never come across one. I have two of the 9.75's on the back of my C20, and two for my Suburban sitting in the garage. I'm picking up two more Thursday so I'll have a set of four. You can also send the 16" wheels to Stockton Wheel and they can widen 'em, not sure how much $$$ it costs but it's probably not cheap. www.stocktonwheel.com

Re: Wider stock 8 lug wheels ???

Robert...not to hi-jack this thread, but if you find two more of those 9.75 x 16.5's I'm interested! I have 4 of the 8.25 x 16.5's and have seen plenty of them around! They were the widest stock wheels available and there were lots of them...out here anyway.

The widest stock 16-in listed is 6.0 inches for the 3/4 and 1 tons and 5.0 inches for the 1/2 tons in the '68 restoration guide. It may have changed for '69 but I doubt it. I am sure there are lots of after market steel wheels done at the time and even now that will work and look stock.

Re: Wider stock 8 lug wheels ???

I had 16.5 on my 72 3/4 ton and went to the yard to find some 16's. I came home with 4 Ford rims off an 80's 1 ton van. I believe they're 16 x 7. I have 265/70 mounted and they went on easy. I took the lug nuts too, but also needed the Ford lugwrench as my stock one was too small. They also accept the stock truck dog dish hubcaps. So if you go to the yard, don't forget to see if you need the lugnuts and wrench. Good luck.

Re: Wider stock 8 lug wheels ???

I was sole bidder on this set until the e-bay seller claimed a fault in the ad and closed the acution early..... I think he sold them on the side since he never replied back. Was planning to hold them hostage just to see how much "stllookn" would offer for them...lol Oh well lost that one! Anyway the guy said these came from a dodge camper special truck.
Eat yer heart out Mike
They where 16.5 x 9.75
