Custom Deluxe emblem from Janesville Plant

The question has come up about the placement of the "Deluxe" emblem on Janesville built "Custom Deluxe" trucks.

Now convention has it that left justified (C30 picture) is the "correct" position per GM and as most vehicles were built. However it seems that some original trucks are seen with the emblem centered (C10 picture).

The vehicle in question is a 72 Janesville built truck. As it so happens there is a post on this subject and supporting pictures by no less than Joesjunk. In this thread he has posted a picture of a very original 72 Janesville truck and the SPID. See post #8.

So how many people have a 72 Janesville "Custom Deluxe" with an original installation center justifed (centered like the C10) "Deluxe Emblem"?
Does anyone have an original installation left justified emblem (like the C30 from Janesville?

Of note is that these two trucks are close serial number wise.
So far we have 126180 and 128270 (to round). If it is a build variation it will be near these numbers if it was a plant practice the numbers will be all over the place.

Please don't post a picture reply unless you have a "J"code Janesville truck or a 71-72 "Custom Deluxe" with an original installation center justified "Deluxe" emblem from any plant. Trying to keep this clear and see if there is a VIN break plus if it is year and plant specific.

To make this work I need VIN numbers. If you don't want to post them with your picture in the thread please send the VIN number, post number and user ID to my research email highdesertdog1969-longhorn@yahoo.com

Thanks Joe, Great info and makes a good template for others. Now you have just pushed the serial number range from being within a 2300 unit range to about 24000.

Also, the plant (closed) is located in Wisconsin. Do you think most of these trucks would be located in upper Mid-west?

Well yes the initial distribution would be clustered in the midwest. But these trucks travel and will be found all over, as we know, now some fourty one years later.

Went through my Highlander files and found two more expanding the VIN range a little more.

Does anyone have a left justifed emblem on a 72Janesville "Custom Deluxe"?

Does anyone have an ending (or very late production) serial number for Janesville 72 truck production?

Joes Junk's C/20 is a '71,isn't it? I really think that's all there is to it. They may have had an abundance of fenders from 1970 due to the 63 day UAW strike and A-used those fenders when supplies ran low in 71/72 and/or B-decided to use them up in '72 because the body was changing.

i think the one in tim's link is joe's 71 - the spid above is his 72, so that kinda lends to the theory it was a location thing rather than a leftover thing. I would have suspected location also if it were only seen on some 71's, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Interesting thread. Makes me want to do a little research on the Super emblems I've seen centered and just assumed were wrongly placed when "fakin it" (or usin a 69-70 fender to fake it w/o fillin n redrillin the original holes)... Or it could be the night shift guy was hittin the Stroh's a little too much before he drilled... (there's my midwest roots comin out, all over the sidewalk)

That's big rust in that region, so the survivor pool might be thin. I would bet to say that most trucks that were manufactured at that plant supported dealerships in that region. As we know, salt roads and steel body trucks were not a winning combination. Need less to say, this is a very interesting observation.

OK you two had me worried for a minute.
Went back and rechecked Joe's truck in the thread "Bought another 72" is a 72.

There are many possible reasons for the emblem positioning. At this point I would really like some examples of 71s so we can see how they were justified. If it changed for 72 then it was intentional for a reason. Would also like to see if the centered emblem continued for the full 72 production run or if it changed back over to the left justified location. So please check through your odd collections and see what you have. Like I posted earlier I found two in my Highlander files.

Finally the replies about this being "interesting" are helpful and appreciated. On projects like this I'm never sure how many people are going to respond or even care about this sort of subtle variation. Thanks for the support!

So the range of possible vehicles would be "Custom Deluxe" C10-30 and K10-20 Pickups, Chassis Cabs and Suburbans from the 71-72 MY assembled at Janesville.

Other avenues of information could be through GM and of course retires that worked at that GM plant during that time period. There is quite a few retirees here in Florida. I run into quite a few at car shows around the state. According how deep you would like to go.

The centered Deluxe badges also sit lower,which supports my theory more,since the engine badges are wider top to bottom.

Thats is correct, and quite possibly true. But its odd that they would keep punching the "incorrect" holes for 2 years.

Tim and Joe, That is my point. Were the emblems left justifed in 71 at Janesville and is there a definable period in 72 that center justifed emblems were used? If it was only a period in 72 then a stock runout makes complete sense. If it was specific to Janesville for all 71 and 72 trucks it would seem more of an intentional deviation from Chevrolet's emblem placement spec.

Thanks Tbone1964, Its great having pictures. It shows pretty much what most "Custom Deluxe" trucks look like. But it is the other variation I am trying to nail down. Now do you know the assembly plant of this truck, it is a "J" code? If it is I would like to have the VIN or serial number.

Just for reference, I have a 71 from Janesville with a center justified Custom emblem and the VIN is 1J639308. Build date on door is 6/71.

Tim, sorry for the bum steer on Joe's 71 "and" 72 - they're both 72s.

So, I am a little confused - I can see where a 71 with centered "Deluxe" could lend itself to the "leftover 70 fender" theory - but why would there be an assumption that 72s prove this theory? I'd assume (and you know what they say about Ass U Me-ing...) that the 70 fender inventory, if leftover, would have been exhausted in 71 sometime, not present in one plant only all the way thru 72(?)

Did they actually make the sheet metal parts at each factory? Or we're they shipped to the factories for assembly? Iirc at Fremont a train pulls up and rolls of steel and parts come off and cars get spit out the other end of a few mile journey. Sorry my questions prolly aren't helping.

Great to hear. This is looking more and more like the Janesville plant used the centered Deluxe emblem for both years. Yours is the highest 71 J serial I know of at this point. Do you know the month of production in 71 from the blue door sticker or engine date?

No worries NO ONE remembers everything all the time.

Originally I thought this was only a small pool of vehicles. A verifed small group could indicate a production clean up and build out with excess inventory. But as the group expands it is looking more and more like they simply used the 70 punch pattern through 71 and 72. But you are right it seems unlikely they were leftovers for that entire period of time.

That would be a lot of left over fenders,so most likely still used the old dies and other plants needed new tooling for whatever reason. Or perhaps Janesville got new tooling from another source and for whatever reason the jobber mistakenly made them the same as they had been and for economic reasons they weren't scrapped.
