possible backwards clutch disk
just put a sm465 in my truck, with new flywheel and clutch assembly.Got it put back together and it won't go into gear with the engine running. I tried to pit it in gear and start it, the truck moved very slightly but sounds like the clutch was slipping badly.
from what I've searched, sounds like the disk is in backwards, my question is which is the correct direction for it to face? it didn't have any markings on it...in hindsight I should have paid more attention to how the old one came out....oh well, hope you guys can shed some light Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
The protruding center part goes towards the pressure plate. Also check the installation of the fork on the throw out bearing. Spring clips should not be on top of lip. Both the fork extension and spring clip should be on the inside.

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
Just a question, how much free play in the c;lutch pedal do yu have? How far down does the pedal travel freely before you feel it start to release the clutch?
It may well just be an adjustment of the throw out linkage. |

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
Are you sure you have the right throwout bearing?
Also, the pivot ball for the clutch fork may be adjustable. I ran into this problem long ago with my three speed. Thought I had the wrong throwout bearing, so i swapped it. Realized i had the right one so i swapped it back and realized i have to adjust the pivot ball forward. |

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
ok, just got trans back out....one side of the clutch disk has just the very center (right around the splines) protuding and the opposite has the whole part inside the friction material sticking out.....right now the side with just the very center protuding is facing the pressure plate....backwards or no?

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
If the protruding center portion is facing the pressure plate and the flat side the flywheel the disc is in correctly. With the lower inspection plate off, see if you can have someone step on the clutch pedal and check that the disc is in fact releasing/disengaging from the flywheel.
With the pedal depressed disc should not turn if it still does, then either the pressure plate is defective (I had that problem before) or there is some other mechanical or adjustment problem. Check the throw-out bearing size as mentioned above. If it in fact is being retracted properly then your tranny has a problem. Last edited by 68gmsee; 01-12-2012 at 04:39 PM. |

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
ok guys, after quick investigation I found that it was backwards....I can see where the flywheel bolts were hitting the springs in the disk, and even putting it up by hand you can tell the disk will only fit in the flywheel one way.....man I wish I would looked at that the 1st time.....I preciate the help yall

Looks like your first instinct was correct. Glad you found the problem.

Re: possible backwards clutch disk
The hub of the clutch disc that includes the springs goes towards the pressure plate and trans.
