Re: So what do you think about Cub Cadet's new style of mower?
Restrorob, TJ, since you guy apparently work on mowers, I have question or two.
Mower-- Craftsman, 16.5 Kohler, LT? It's about 14 years old and still runs fine, but it quit charging the battery. What is it likely to be? The diode pack (easy) or will I have to pull the flywheel? 2nd- What do you think of the MadDog zero turn mowers? The look pretty robust just sitting there. For the price, they look pretty darn good to me.

Re: So what do you think about Cub Cadet's new style of mower?
Check for battery voltage at the regulator which will be the center wire in the plug connector with a multimeter. If you don't have battery voltage at the regulator check for a blown fuse-bad connections in harness or broken wires. If you do have battery voltage at the regulator, check the regulator ground and make sure it's clean and tight. If so disconnect the regulator and put a multimeter set on AC volts (that's AC volts) across the two white stator wires. Start the engine and run about 3000 RPM, if you see more than 28 volts AC from the stator on the multimeter the faulty part is the regulator. If you see less than 28 AC volts from the stator you have a stator-flywheel magnet issue, Kohler's are known for magnets coming unglued and wiping out the stator. I've yet to see a MadDog mower so can't really comment on them......

Thanks guys. Why is it that I understand a V8 and it's charging system, but small engines are a mystery?
The fuse is good, and new. As for the rest, I will need to check. I never thought about the ground wire.
