What is needed to installv-8 in I-6 loc?

do I need I-6 stands or my v-8 stands work?drill holes? what?

So, if I read you right, you've got a V8 in it right now, but wanna move it back to the I6 position. Your stands and everything stay the same, you'll just need to move them back to the I6 set of holes in the frame, they should already be drilled there. AS far as the tranny cross member, it will need to be moved back. But as for that, I'm at a loss.

it looks to me that I have no lower holes for it. anyone have a pic of the lower motor tower holes??

For the lower holes, you'll probably have to set the stands and engine down inthere, get everything lined up straight, then mark the holes, pull the engine, drill and install.

hey chevy2racer, mine was originally an i-6. I now have a v-8. at the time i knew nothing of 2 different mounting locations. when i look at mine i can only see on hole in front my existing mount. so either there is only 3 holes and they share the center or one of the two holes for the v-8 location is completely covered by the mount.

the 6 & v8 stands are different. On the top of the frame, the 6 stands bolt to the rear 2 holes(v8 stands to the front 2 holes). You will find exactly 2 1/2 " cent to cent on the top bolt holes on the frame.......however, due to the shape of the stands, i 6 position gives 3 1/2" of set back from sb v8 position. At the bottom, the 6 stands bolt to the rear of the crossmember(you will see the boltholes, in a slightly recessed area). i have done 3 of them this way......trust me , you dont have to drill anything if you use the 6 /250 stands. If you are running a stick, toss the bell crossmember, & use an auto crossmember under the trans......the bell crossmembers are also different 3 times.....BB stick, sb stick, & I 6 stick. they all position differently, & are on a slope on the rails, so they cant be moved to use in a different position. Sorry, no pics of the bottom at this time, but the 383 is in i 6 position, with a 6 spd Richmond behind it( on a modified auto crossmember). good luck, crazyL

so Jay and Crazy, you both used I-6 stands? will my v-8 stands set then engine lower in the frame than a standard I-6 stand with a v-8? thanks

I couldnt find a measurable difference on nose height with either position. If I had to give a number, i would say the v8 sits approx 1/4" lower in I 6 position( with I 6 stands & crossmember) than it does in factory V8 position. I used a 73 up long waterpump, & didnt have any issues with centering the fan in the stock sb shroud. crazyL

here is a pic

of I-6 stands mounted on my frame (swapping them out for BB stands). You can see that they use the back hole in the cross member and are shaped differently than the v-8 stands. They will use the same motor mount though.

I also agree with Crazy Longhorn .... i have both types of stands (I-6 & V-8) and plan on putting my V-8 back in the I-6 position to move the engine towards the cab. They are NOT the same peices ...

How close is the HEI to the firewall ?
Does it still come out easily. any other down sides ?

The HEI fits, with about 1 finger clearance tween the firewall & the cap(pretty snug). It will go in/out of the eng with the cap & rotor off. it hasnt been a problem, but when I upgrade Im going small cap MSD.........crazyL one upside, the oil pan will come off with the eng mounts in place

I know the holes on the top, I've known those for quite some time, its the lower hole on a v-8 stand. it doesn't line with any predrilled holes. thats where a i-6 stand would line up with a lower hole as well I assume. Jay, if you can get me a pic of how you shortend yours(where I can see the cut part) it may help man

71step- I just noticed something too, anyreason you didn't remove the z-bar mount beofre you had that beast powder coated?

At the time I wasn't sure what I wanted to do there so I left it. I kinda wish I would have removed it now, but once we are put back together you won't see it. The 502 will hopefully distract your attention from that!!
