chevy 230 inline 6 ID

I have done enough web searching to find conflicting info on ID'ing this inline six, so can someone straighten me out?

the block casting number is 3921967, which seems to be a 64-69 230 (not a 250). The casting date of CON2 H237 being August 23rd 1967. then the confusing part is the suffix code of F0824TA. 0824 confirms the august date, but the TA I can only find as a 1965 230 (or a 1966 250).

So, is this a 1967 van 230? I saw one reference that might suggest the vans in 67 came with 230s, but the ONLY place I can find reference to TA as the suffix on a 230 is for 1965. Or is it possible that 3921967 is possibility a 250? This came out of a stupid original 1968 C10, but that only confuses the issue, so I am not certain if the engine is original to the truck.

Please help!!

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 ID

ok, I found this 67 chassis manual, and sure enough TA is a suffix code for a 1967 chevy 250. I know people have manuals, but it sure would be nice to find a full listing of the suffix codes!!!

Look for the cast date code on the PS of the block towards the rear. There will be a cast mark like CON 2 and then the date cast mark. See photo. Also use a feeler through the spark plug hole to feel the top of the piston. The 250 piston will have a dished out top. The 230 will be flat like this video shows at the 45 second mark.

Re: chevy 230 inline 6 ID

3921967 does show up as
3921967
Manufacturer: Chevrolet

Category: Engine Blocks

Type: Inline-6

Date: 1964-1969

Notes: 230 CID, Chevrolet

From this link http://www.castingnumbers.info/site/...t/Inline-6/p/5

Still the difference between a 230 and a 250 is the stroke of the crank and the rods and pistons. Bore is the same and you can swap internals.

If they haven't been worked on 230 engines are supposed to have flat top pistons while 250 have dished pistons so a look in a spark plug hole might give some idea there.

Still outside of maybe a bit lower power in the 230 or less torque it isn't worth arguing about and going on several sites to hope you get the answer you want. Good little old reliable six that properly built will go a couple hundred K and run down the road real nice.
