photo was taken a couple weeks ago in Wells, Maine. that's my 72 burb c20 and a very solid camper special (for sale) in the background.

Re: My Blue Truck, painted

a retro stereo would have been more in keeping with the restored look instead of cutting the dash. there are lots of bolt in upgrades you can do to make it more user friendly while keeping the factory look

front disc brakes for 6 lug wheels (should be mandatory for towing)
front sway bar (again, very nice especially when towing)
tachometer and vacuum gauges (fill those empty holes)
200-4r overdrive trans (same length as a turbo 350)

but that is a gorgeous rig and i applaud you for not jumping on the chop it, channel it bandwagon! you just can't beat the rugged good looks of a classic chevy truck in stock form!

I agree with you fully, I see many trucks slammed and rimmed and I say "cool", but I like original best.
You're right when it comes to keeping a retro stereo, but there were none I could find at the time that lets you navigate your ipod. And the speaker holes in the doors were already there when I bought it. I like the stereo and for me it's an acceptable exception.

I know about all the potential upgrades you mentioned except the front sway bar, what does that do? I would like an over-drive transmission for highway economy, but would be an added expense I'd have to save for. I am borrowing my current engine from my cousin because the original 350 blew up when the oil pressure gauge line snapped. I'm going to build a mild 327 with an economy cam, and likely 283 power-pak heads (327 is the original engine for this truck as stated on the glove box door ).

Thanks for your post, I appreciate your compliment.

Re: My Blue Truck, painted

yeah.....one thing at a time. i just finished paying off the loan i took out to pay for my burb (3 year loan done in 2). and i have spent a lot of money on extras from lmc truck, car and truck shop and classic performance products.

for a sway bar, an 70's-80's 2wd truck (look for the 1-1/4" dia. bar on a 1 ton) that has one should bolt on unless your control arms don't have the holes. i know it was an option in 72 that my burb didn't have. the bar helps keep the truck level side to side, counteracting body roll which makes for more stable, predictably handling.

i bought the expensive unit from CPP that uses end-links instead of brackets to connect to the control arms. it came with the the frame brackets and hardware/bushings (in polyurethane). factory bar would have been much cheaper and look more correct but it was still a bolt in job and i got the matching rear 1-1/8" dia bar (requires drilling) from CPP also because burb's have more body roll and i plan to do a lot of towing. best option for you is to find a donor truck and take all the hardware including the drop down brackets on the frame (will require an air chisel to drive out the rivets that GM used instead of bolts).

you've mastered auto mechanics. now brush up on your carpentry and wood carving skills and build a box rather than buy one. and keep on truckin'....

Whew, far from mastered. I'm taking on building an engine in the summer, but until then I can't say I've mastered it . I'm a vocal major so I can't go full time into truckin', but making a box when I'm older would be a really fun project.

I'll look into a sway bar. It would be nice to get rid of the "swing" I experience on turns.

I'm showing it at a car show in Aptos, CA in July, a chance to see it if you're in the area .
Wha? What's wrong with my poor horn cap? It's original, I suppose I could steel wool it to death to bring out the shine more .

Beautiful truck! I like the "new" black and yellow plates too, where did you get them?

Thanks,

Don't listen to them.

Your tool box looks fine, I actually think you picked the right box to go with the truck, not stupidly huge, low profile top, it looks good to me.

Beautiful truck, congrats on the build. I think the tool box looks fine on there. Its a truck, and it obviously is used as a truck.

You can order them at http://www.cr8apl8.com/
They're plastic with indented lettering. Not very authentic, but I covered them with a clear plastic shield, so it doesn't look bad at all. It was about $60 for the pair. They make metal ones too, but they're more expensive.

Wow Thanks. My truck certainly isn't perfect in every spot, I have a few flaws here and there, including areas that weren't straightened or bondo'd perfectly, but I have to look past that and be satisfied.

I agree with the other guys saying a more authentic truck box would compliment the look, but honestly I use the truck as my regular vehicle and it's not a collector car; The box I have is handy and I think it looks fine.

Well that's a nice horn cap for sure. I like mine though 'cause it's original.

ONE THING I WANT TO DO when I can afford it is get original HUB CAPS. The ones I have are from a like van or something that my cousin gave me. #CHV974 on this page look nice! http://www.hubcaps.org/chevtruck.html

Question: Are those the factory original hub caps or something else?

Cool, not technically legal, but cool nonetheless!
