Gas pedal question

My 67 has an interesting gas pedal, two ball studs at the bottom hold the pedal to the truck, and it slides at the top.

With the new carpet, I can't get the pedal to stay on the balls. I'm wondering if anyone here has adapted a different type of pedal, one that does not rely on a mount at the bottom.

If so, I would be interested in how you did it.
