Re: crew cab showcase

Why go to 3.42? It won’t tow as well. I wish I had 4.10. Mine has 3.73. The 5.3 won’t make nearly as much torque as the 454.

Because I don't tow (never put a hitch in it) with this vehicle and my daughter uses it for a lot of "farm" running around grabbing 8-10 sacks of feed and such. To use it as a more of an everyday driver type. My two tow vehicle have had goosenecks hooked to them at least the last 6-8 month

The Vortec 454s had too much torque management programmed into their tuning at the factory along with a too "lazy" camshaft grind for good towin. You got to remember these trucks were being built when the masses and hipsters started thinking it was cool to own a 3/4 ton or a "dually". Most of the ones around me now are never hooked to more than small bumper pull with a golf cart or side by side

I've done 0411 swaps on the 454s, played with cams- timing etc. I'm reasonably versed in them but don't know it all. I've Street, raced, and towed with them about 40 years. Still own a few, but their usefulness for me is waning. I've got this crew, an 88crew cab(square body) with one I used to tow a travel trailer with and 3-4 more "spare" engines. Just getting too old to work on them I guess

Re: crew cab showcase

If you look at GMs truck engine choices in the late 90s, the 454 had the most power and torque offered. The 454 would out tow the 6.5. Both of my 454s are regularly towing/hauling combinations of 15,000 pounds.

I do have a tune(but still running the black box pcm) on my 99

I don’t have a time on my 96. It has a real transmission, and a 4.88 axle.

All my towing since I got out of the service in '92 (except the above mentioned 88 cc) has been with a 5.9 Cummins. I performed my first conversion in 1995 as I hated the Ram body. Put it in a 93 K3500 CC that dad had already blown up the 6.5 in.
Currently I am running a Cummins powered Chevy and have an 06 megacab Dodge. I hate the ISB Cummins. As soon as I finish my 88 CC SRW Cummins Conversion the Megacab will be sold, as the only thing I like about it is the G56 trans.
In 05-06 I considered buying a new Chevy with a D Max, but GM would not build one with a standard transmission by then. I don't pull with automatics. I always hear from people I know about how much their Dmax/Allison or Powerstroke will pull. I have "unhitched the wagon" from my truck on 8-10 different occasions, but have yet to ever have one of their trucks back under neck of my trailer once they see it.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.
It's like a highly skilled Morrocan sword fighter with a Damascus Steel Scimitar.....

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.
