Re: No reverse lights

I wouldn't swear to it but I don't believe the flashers have anything to do with reverse lights. Maybe it's the NSS on the steering column.

Re: No reverse lights

Check the switch on the column. It should bring the reverse line hot at some point through the sweep of the needle, find out where it is and if it works!

IIRC, it's on top of the steering column, near the firewall.

Re: No reverse lights

I concur but keep in mind the NSS is two switches and the purple wires will be the starter side the other lighter wires will be the back up lights. make sure the tang isnt broke off or check and see if the truck will turn over in say reverse [but do that safely] and it may be the switch or adjustment

Re: No reverse lights

I just went through that on my 68. It was the switch on the steering column bottom closer to the inside firewall. If it's automatic, you may be able to locate the switch in local auto parts but if it's a three speed column shift, you'll probably have to order it like I did.

First thing to do is to try to adjust the switch by loosening the two small screws and moving it one way or the other. Make sure the truck is in reverse and the key to the on position when adjusting. Helps if you have someone behind to let you know if they come on.

Next, check the voltage to the connector with the key on to see if you have 12vdc.

Re: No reverse lights

Not to hijack, but where is the reverse light switch on a 4 speed granny gear? I also have no reverse lights.

Same problem all my lights work except reverse I have replaced all bulbs and rear wiring. Anyone have a picture of a NSS mounted in a 4spd truck?

Highway:
On the SM465* 4 Speed the Reverse Switch is mounted high in the ''neck'' of the tranny on the left or Driver's Side. If it's not a hassle to pull the hump cover, it's right there. If that's not convenient, crawl under the rig and feel your way up the side. Two terminals in a rubber plug run to there. If it's dislodged, reattach it. The switch is a replaceable item if FUBAR.
* The SM420 is similar if not the same. But since the shift lever goes to the left instead of right when selecting reverse, it could be on the opposite side. I'm not expert on the 420. Their last model year was 1967.

Noah:
Neutral Safety Switches are not present on manually-equipped trucks. It's possible for an originally automatic truck that was converted to manual to still have the NSS on the harness. This is a rare conversion, the trend usually goes the other way.

Re: No reverse lights

Are you blowing the reverse lamp fuse? If so, then your reverse switch on the tranny is probably working and you have a direct short somewhere (insulation worn off wire and grounding out). If you are not blowing fuses, you might have a bad switch OR bad grounds. I'd go after the low hanging fruit first and check all your grounds for the reverse lamps.

Re: No reverse lights

first check to see if you have power at the reserve light socket. If so there is a grounding issue or problem with the bulb socket.
If no power at the bulb then replace the neutral safety switch since it also activates reverse lights.
The NSS can slide on the small 5/16" screws and will need adjusted to your Reverse selector.
