Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

I switched out the farm truck rear bumper and installed an NOS chrome stepside sport rear bumper. It still had the PN tag on the inside. I also removed the front bumper guards and installed an aftermarket period correct SAFEGUARD chrome front grill guard that attaches using the original bolts.

I also installed a front 1-1/8" sway bar off a 73 3/4 ton truck. I cleaned and painted it and installed new bushings. Boy, what a difference that made in handling! I also will be installing power brakes soon.

BTW, this truck is for sale in the FOR SALE forum.

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

I picked the grill guard up from Craigslist a year or so ago for $50. It probably cost more than that new... It was on a 69 or 70 Chevy at the time. It will fit 67-70 Chevy or 67-72 GMC, but the bolt holes/ bumper brackets are different on 71/72 Chevy becasue of the turn signal housing in the bumper.

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

I just nticed it says "Fort Worth 6, Texas". I wonder what's up with that???

If you look closely, n the reflection on the bolt head you can see me in my big palm frond hat, Barbarosa style... It was around 100 degrees here...

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

Someone asked me where I got the rear bumper and grill guard. I found the grill guard o the local craigslist. Someone was parting out a 70 Chevy and I saw it in the photos. I got it for $50 (!)

I bought the bumper at the New Braunfels swap meet this past April. I guess no one wanted it since it had a few scrapes from shelf wear. I talked him down to $100. Not bad, IMO considering it still is better quality than repro.

I sold the truck today to a fellow from New Braunfels, TX named Barry. I told him about this website. You may or may not see him on here later!

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

The guy who bought it added later rally wheels, CPP 3" drop and power brakes and has been asking $12k for a few moths. I am not sure if he bought it to flip or if he got bored, found something else or what. I don't think he will get what he is asking.

http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/cto/3496381391.html

I was also not too happy about him plagarizing my original ad, but I will not flag it for removal.

I guess this is a free plug for the guy selling it. If anyone here sees this and buys it, you owe me! HAHA

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

I really liked the steel wheels and hubcaps look. Still a good looking truck.

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

Unfortunately, my dad passed away last Friday from heart failure. He was 81 and still living at home. My momma passed away 7 1/2 years ago and he had been heart broken since. He went quickly and now his journey is through. He had a thing for charcoal grey trucks. He was a pipeline welder. A good friend of his shared a photo of him with one of his trucks back in the late 80's or early 90's. It was an 80 GMC with a built 454 and a 4 speed. (Dad is on the left.)

Re: Did a little work to dad's 71 GMC today

I’m sorry to hear about your dad. Especially at this time of year. I commend you for keeping up with this truck thru different owners, I don’t think I could do that especially to one my dad and I built. Too see other people trash your treasure and take credit where credit isn’t due on something so sentimental would piss me off for sure. It was a great looking truck before you sold it! Still is now but not as good as it was before.
