rear axle gear ratio
Is there anyway of telling what gears I have in my axle without pulling the cover off? It is a 12 bolt axle on a 68 truck. The numbers on the axle are 12345, 67890, E188 thanks for any help.

If the truck runs, give us the tire size, transmission, and RPMs at 60mph. That'd be enough. The numbers probably don't mean anything, axles get changed and gears get changed in axles. I've got a friend with a truck that originally had a 3.08 posi that now has a 3.73 open.

hmmm, 3.08 wasn't available. If you counted the teeth, it shoulda been 3.07.
Pull the cover off and count the teeth. You have no idea how much oil is in there, or how old it is. It is easier than chainging your motor oil, and way easier than tranny fluid. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. Err, 3.07. I keep confusing the two. Original rear on that truck is long gone, the previous guy figured that 3.73 open was better than 3.07 posi.

Yes, you can figure out what gears are in the truck without removing the cover. Jack up ONE wheel put the truck in neutral, turn the wheel TWO FULL revolutions and count how many times the driveshaft turns. if it turns 3 times and a little more it is a 3.07, if it turns 3 times and most of another then it is a 3.73 if it turns 4 times and a little more then it is a 4.11. Also if it turns HARD then it is most likely a posi if it turns easily then it is most likely open or a VERY worn out posi. this should get you a close estimation of what you have. If your gonna change gears then I wouldn't worry about changing oil yet but if you plan on keeping what you have then it would probably be a good Idea to change the oil. your only looking at about $5 for the gasket and a little for some 90wt. oil. Good preventitive maintenance is your best friend. Hope this helps.
