Frame coatings that last

What type of coating would be used on a frame to ensure that it lasts as long as possible? I have heard of jet coating, powder coating and por15ing ( is that a word? It is now

Kind of depends what the trucks usage after you get it back together. I like powder coat. After sand blasting and powder coating the finish is very durable. My 98 Wrangler when I redid it I had the frame sand blasted and powder coated. It's been 15 years and still looks very good.
On the other hand my 80 Camaro project I sand blasted the parts and sprayed a single semi gloss black paint. It will never see a winter as long as I have it.
Powder will be tougher. Single stage paint will be cheaper and easy to apply.

I used chassis saver satin black on my K20 6-7 years ago and it has held up flawlessly so far. I wire wheeled the whole frame.

I used POR15 on my 64' Used wire brush then brushed on POR15, turned out nice.

I would only powder coat a show truck. I prefer Mastercoat products over POR15. They are a step above. The founder is a chemist who helped develop POR15. He quit when they cheapened up on the ingredients.

I used Summit Racing chassis black paint. You mix their "thinner" with their paint and that is all that is needed. It came out awesome looking and it won't chip.

I would go with powder coating if I had that option, but the chassis paint worked better than I thought. I have used POR-15 and personally, the stuff is a mess, hard to clean, and discolored after 2 years. I will never use it again.

You've got some cool projects. What did you paint the inner fenders on the Camaro with? I like that sheen. Less gloss than is typical.

On the question at hand, I have seen POR 15 layout really nice, glass like. But to my personal taste it's glossy. And it seems even when people buy the semi-gloss it still comes out pretty glossy. All depends on the look that you want.

One thing to remember, POR-15 is UV sensitive, therefore it must be top coated to ensure durability.

Personally I don't like the stuff, and obviously there are better products on the market that actually deliver and don't require a topcoat.

POR15 also comes in semi-gloss black.
Last I looked it was $44 a pint, $67 a quart.
Disclaimer, I have used it once.
I couldn't get the lid off a new can. Had to return it for another.
I was told it hardens using the moisture in the air.
The chances of saving any for later is low.

As soon as I open any of that moisture cure stuff I put it in a glass jar with a canning lid. The lid tops have a good seal and are cheap to replace.

The paint shop guy told me to put some welding shielding gas (argon is best but 75/25 will work) to displace the existing atmosphere in the top of the can. I never tried it but maybe that works.

Heck, sometimes I struggle getting the lid off of molasses!

I have used eastwoods chassis black recently and it sprays well in a gun but comes in cans as well. it has a nice semi satin finish to it but i do not know how it will hold up over time. I have also used POR15 on another truck, mostly for inside areas i want to protect like inside doors etc. My last vehicle i had no issues with rust coming thru so i think it worked. it doesnt like UV so you cant use it where it will absorb UV or it will discolor to a brown hue. gross. I had it on a frame that sat outside without a body on it and it eventually just faded away 100% or flaked and fell off. This is the one i recently re-sprayed with eastwood after por15 disappeared

with P0r 15 i always considered the can single use. if you have leftover you have to find a mason jar to put the remainder in or you wont be able to open the can again. I think that does say something about its rust protection capabilities

So the 80 Camaro was a bit of a journey paint/powder coat wise. The car was a super clean 28K mile car when I bought it a couple years ago. Zero rust car. Not on speck due to being sprayed with rust proofing by Zeibart. So that was good. But when I was doing the LS swap I had the all the front end parts sand blasted in prep for powder coat. But in preparation for the powder the shop pre-heats the parts. As soon as they did that the Zeibart rust proofing turned to liquid and ran out from every where. So no go on the powder. I cleaned up the mess. The using spray bomb Rust-oleum primer and paint I just sprayed it. The paint is semi-gloss black. Turned out great in my opinion. Another pic of the 80.
The other pic is of my 68 C10. On that I did a satin black powder coat.

I used Rustoleum farm implement paint in "low gloss black". Wire brushed frame and brushed it on. It's been over 5 years and still looks good. I have only driven the truck about 500 miles though.

I bought the Eastwood two part semi-gloss black chassis paint that will go over their rust encapsulator paint. I am hoping to start this chassis restoration in a few weeks. I have read good reviews on this and figured I would give it a shot.

Powder coat if at all possible. It is the best and I have used several different methods, including POR15, which eventually wears off, especially in the sunlight. (almost becomes powdery and can spear when you wipe it).

My last project on my 70 C10 was 90% black gloss, THAT was a mistake, too glossy.

I won't use POR15 anymore. It will not adhere to nice shiny smooth steel. It likes to peel off. That sucks. The stuff isn't exactly cheap and is super hard to reuse if you don't use the whole can the first time.

I used standard POR15 followed by their caliper paint with nice results. Matter of fact the shop I hired managed to lose some Dot3, I discovered weeks later. Some of the caliper paint was removed, but overall a pleasant surprise. I used their engine paint too, on the block, intake, water pump, thermo. housing and a clip or two. So far with real nice results. Other then that, perhaps, there are much better options.
