FWIW, back when I first got into my Cummins, the kits were still almost 500 bucks as well, made my own from instructions given to me on DTR, under 70 bucks complete. Works just as good as the pro kit

Here is the PM from a fellow dieselhead.

"Hey no problem, I dont mind helping.
Well, You can get a delivery valve socket from piers diesel for $30.
2. For the dial indicator, Harbor Freight sells them for $10, and it works just as good as an expensive one. It has been used ot the forum more than once. The only prob. with it is it is in inches. That isnt a big deal, because if you search on DTR people have converted the mm to in. measuremens.
3. For a dial indicator holder, you can use a drain plug from our cummins. I went to autozone and they had one for $5.00. You just drill out the center so the dial indicator slides in there. Then you need to drill and tap a small hole for a set screw in the side of the drain plug, so the indicator doesnt move.
4. For the gear puller, any cheap steering wheel puller will work. You can get them from auto parts stores, for under $20.

I did mine this way and it worked out great. I looked on ebay and came across a metric dial indicator for cheap, after I did it with the inch dial indicator.

There you go, under $70.

Also, I dont recommend it, but I have read on here people use a set of chanel-locks and a rag to get the delivery valve holder off. The only prob. with that, is re-torquing the holder, to much and you will tear the o-ring and you can only get it at a bosch dealer, I guess its some weird size."

I am sure prices have gone up a tick since then, but not that much.

You and I are less than a hr apart . We can split on Ryan's travel costs and he can tweak my pump as well . lol. Truck is looking good . Like your new heater as well. Im just in the process of rigging up a waste oil heater . Go to YouTube some time and type in efficient waste oil heater. The guy in the vid looks like relic from beachcombers Heater is kick ass . He has done lots of homework to get it to this level

That could be a fun trip. Speaking of heaters, I managed to get a fuel oil/diesel burning furnace I have to get installed in my shop.

When you get to the point of adjusting your timing, let me know. We have two kits and I could probably send you one and let you borrow it.

If you can take a week off and come up here I am only another hour and a bit north of Brian. I can hire you to mount a cummins in my longhorn chassis.

Haven't decided yet. I would like to build 4wd but really don't want too big of a lift in it as its my daily work truck and I need access to the flat bed.

well this is too funny. brimc, i just happened to stumble across this thread and thought that truck looked familiar. i remember that truck came up on kijiji years ago and i went up to see it twice as well! it was up in the wasaga beach area if i remember correctly? i was dragging my heels over the money and just when i was ready to pull the trigger and give the guy his asking price, i called him he told me that it had just left the driveway. man was i kicking myself haha. glad to see it went to a good home though!

Well that is funny. I too dragged my feet for sometime then after he reduced his asking price, I gave him a lowball offer he accepted. Thought I did alright because I actually just paid him and jumped in the truck and drove it home. It drove great. Wasn't till I found out about the dead cylinder that I felt I paid too much. All in all I'm glad I got it. It is taking me a very long time but I know it will be worth it in the end. Thanks for the interest. Hopefully have some updates soon!

Nothing really to update. Just getting the cab prepped. Final sanding on the bottom and finish prep the new cab corners and rockers. Plan on spraying the bottom first gravel guard sound deadner then paint. Flip it up then paint the entire cab. Want to have the entire body painted this spring.

Tired of winter yet. Much more tolerable than last year tho. How's your new heater working? I made a waste oil burning unit for my shop this winter. Had it working a few weekends now. It sure has been a welcome addition to my shop this year.

Tired yes. Winter just seams to take a lot more out of you. The heater in the garage works very good. Better then I expected. The built in thermostat regulates the draft to the firebox very good. It holds a good bit of wood too so it will go several hours before dieing out.

I backed off looking in this last year or so but anything I could find was just too far to even consider the drive or shipping. If you can find one of those that would be awesome

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build

Well winter finally let up and I found some time to work on the project. The other day I pulled the cover off the frame and rolled it outside to clean up the garage some. I decided to hook up the battery and see what it would do. A couple cranks and the Cummins fired right up! No grids, no smoke, no problem. Hearing that engine idle smooth was music to my ears!
I also got the cab completely welded, sanded and prepped for the next step-paint. I again used por15 but only on the "rusty" areas and the "new" metal and mig welds. Time will tell on that call. Got the first coat of filler on the cab corners and rockers.

I used short strand fibreglass over the welded seams for sealing and strength. I will go over that with a lightweight filler next to level it out.
I also got the entire bottom side of the cab floor and firewall sprayed with undercoat/sound deadner. Then sprayed a gloss black topcoat.

I think it turned out pretty good. Hopefully I will get more to update soon!

I used this. $42 gallon. Seems to go pretty far. Spaying it everywhere will hopefully seal it up good and help with soundproofing like it says on the can. Time will tell tho.

Nice work! That's a good feeling that winter is nearly out of here. Hearing the engine fire up is always a good motivational tool too!

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build

Dominion sure seal ltd. Premium rubberized rocker guard black. Applied it with a Shultz gun then two coats gloss black tremclad mixed with Dupli-color reducer. This stuff is very forgiving and hides everything. If you apply with dry coats and keep the top coats dry also it looks and feels like bedliner. I like it a lot so far and is very easy (and cheap) to apply. I'm planning on using this in winter and our roads are very bad for sandblasting. Rust protection and sound deadner in one. And if I get a scratch in the paint in will be black underneath. We will have to wait and see how it stands up.

Thanks. I am thinking of putting Al's liner on my bed floor top and bottom. I'm always open for cheaper/better ways too.

This stuff is good but will not stand up as good as bedliner. I will be using bedliner in the box but I think I will just spray paint only on the bottom side of the box floor because there is less need for protection or sound deadening there.

Re: 86 Silverado K20 12V CUMMINS Build

I'm finally getting to the stage of putting things together where things start to look like a truck again.
Got the rear window installed along with the cab trim.

Then I decided to put the cab on the frame.

[URL=http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/brimc_99/media/Mobile%20Uploads/E57F33EF-00C7-4D66-BD82-1E46F88C9851_zpstmfpxmls.jpg.html]

It might not look it but that is very high with those 35" tires and new 4" springs. That cab lift on the end of the engine hoist works awesome!!

So stoked now. Starting to look like a truck again.

Hopefully things start moving along better now that the good weather is finally here

The only other pics I have are back on the early pages of this build when I made it to take the cab off the first time. It is only 2 2X4's bolted to the end of the engine hoist. The wood lets the door flanges bite into it and there is no movement at all. I can move the entire cab by myself no problem.
