Size:  53.4 KB Right after I test ran it to adjust the ignition timing and so on , I added a short exhaust pipe as the first time it lit off it belched out a 12" ball of greasy smoke and fire , dirtying the fresh paint .

The other side , showing the later model OEM HEI I went with this time and the long engine and TH350 tranny oil dipsticks I used , also using OEM GM parts from G - Series vans , I'm too old & beat up to enjoy leaning over the fender to do my daily fluid checks . Name:  IMG_0876[1].jpg

I have a question about the I-6 exhaust manifold bolts. On my 69 C-10, the very front and rear bolt heads are missing. I initially assumed the bolt heads had broken off over time. After looking through multiple pictures in this thread, I've noticed others are like this. Are they supposed to be like this or have the heads just broken off with time.

If I remember correctly from other posts that's how they were designed. I had to look it up when I pulled my head and thought the same as you.

That's normal.
In the stock application the L6 studs work OK. If you're hanging headers, you'll want to back out the studs with a big ViceGrips turning counterclockwise. Then you have some nice bores 3/8-16 x <1" deep. Threaded studs 3/8-16 UNC on one end, and 3/8-24 on the other work real good to hold the header ends down.

Post Exhaust Manifold Pins

This end locating pins are *very* important ~ the reason they're there is : as it goes through normal thermal cycles the exhaust manifold expands and contracts ~ adding bolts on the very ends , often causes the manifold to break .

There's much more engineering in InLine Engines than appears at a glance .

That's why they out last V configuration engines .

Here's my 292 going into my 66. .040 ross racing pistons, comp cam, 1.94 intake 1.60 exhaust valves, lump port kit, .030 shaved off the head, roller rockers, smith bro's pushrods, aluminum timing gears, fully balanced and 0 decked. Bunch more but I'm too lazy to post it all again. Pictures! This will be mated to a tko600.

Not exactly my truck, but this is my very first car I bought when I was 18 and it's what I learned about cars and engines through. I'm almost 46 now so you do the math. I had so many offers to sell this in my late teens and 20's and even had an offer of $15,000 cash just 2 years ago that I laughed at, but I just could not sell her and part with something with such sentimental value. It's so original and I wanted to keep her that way instead of butchering her like every other (yaaaawn) Camaro out there and I always swore I'd never do this. Unfortunately, the PG blew up on the way home from work one night over a year ago and I put it aside until this weekend when I went to pull the trans. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to 2 of the bolts and realized it would be easier to just pull out all the organs at once in order to pull the trans so that's what I did. Now I'm seriously tempted to stuff a 1968 truck 327 in there along with a 2004R or a TH350, all of which I have sitting around unused. At minimum I have some serious cleaning to do and I'll pull apart the PG and fix it. Once it's all done I'll have to decide which direction to go. I've got a bunch of L6 accessories like PS pump/brackets, Offy intake, Crane Cams 260H that I've been saving for years, however I sure love the hp of the V8 that I've had in my 68 C10 for several years. I don't know what I'm ultimately going to do- I'm really torn!

Keep it all original. Very few left like that. V8's are a dime a dozen at the car shows that it's almost boring to look at them.

I agree with CST10. The V8 is very popular. Though I refer mainly to the stinkin 350. I'd take that 6 banger and throw those accessories on it. These 6 bangers can make v8 power if some work is done. Heck, you could throw 8 pounds of boost on that thing stock as it sits and That would make a HUGE difference.

There's a reason Camaros are called ' belly buttons ' in the trade .

I'd keep the 6 as they make terrific drivers as you know if you've been driving it all these years .

OTOH , a nice 327 would be fun too .

I am going to strongly disagree with you about the end pins. First off the header manufacturers tell you to replace them with studs. Secondly the metal in a header does not expand enough to cause an alignment issue. The metal is to thin on a header. I don't know anyone who has ever broken a header flange bolting the ends. I know several people that fought with leak after leak and gasket blow out from NOT using bolts in the ends.
I have run headers with bolted ends for 22 years and 100+ thousand miles and never had a leak.

If you are running headers on a SIX, tap the holes!

I agree with you on the end-studs on headers. I'm at about 280,000 miles and 38 years.

Post Exhaust Header Hardware

Correct ~

Headers are thinner and don't ' crawl ' like cast iron exhaust manifolds do .

FWIW , you don't " tap the holes " as they're already threaded ~ just use vise grips or a stud remover to remove the pins then use an appropriate size bolt .

you regularly seem to strive to post OFFENSIVE comments.

if there was ANYTHING bellybutton about a 67-8 Camaro nowdays,the world would be an entirely different place its NOT 1976 anymore,, and you perhaps would not roll around in some clanking smoking old 240d Mercedes diesel,( which it would take about 12-13 of to pay for an average 60's Camaro nowdays) and try hawking old VW and motorcycle crap.
