On a stock auto, I would not recomend starting out in second... assuming have a trans that would actually start in second... older fords do this, and late model GM 4L60E... but even they will kick to first when you stomp it.
if you have a TH400, you'll want to go into second gear as soon as you can, right after the tires start spinning is best. A good burnout is murder to a tranny, and very easy to over rev causing stress to the engine's lower end.
Driveshafts and U joints are stressed pretty good too.
If you have an open diff, then it's not real good to do. If your speedo says 40, then that one tire is doing 80, and that is not good for the diff at all.
Motor mounts are tested too.
I was always tought a burnout is when you keep the vehicle in place and spin the tires, also called brake torque, brake stand, or power braking. A line lock makes it easy, but is not needed.
Just nailing it and going straight (or not straight) is just spinning the tires.
Doing it in a manual shift is the only one that is slightly hard... Left foot on the clutch to the floor, trans in first, right foot, heel on the brake and toe on the throttle. Rev enough to keep from stalling but don't over rev and blow the clutch or a U joint, in a fairly quick motion let out the clutch without stalling the engine.
if you are real good you can nail it into second without letting the tires stop.
It'll impress your friends.
unless you are at the strip, and on slicks, it's kinda pointless.
but fun.

by the logic of the open diff.

if you lock one tire down on the open diff the other will spin 2:1 bescause of the spider gears.

skinny down and hang your foot on the brake, dont jam it just keep it from taking off.

Never been able to get my 2.2L/5spd S-10 to do one I kinda did one on wet pavement...

My truck has a "weak" 70's tree-fiddy in it and I can do burnouts easy. Brake stand and straight line just by nailing the gas. There's no weight over the butt.

A true rolling burnout doesn't use the brakes at all. But you're going to need more than 290hp to get it done!

thats funny. I HAVE to use the brakes to get my tires going. even with my stroker motor. if i just punch it off the line on a dry day, she hooks right up and takes off. makes me sad cuzz then it makes me feel like it doesn't have enough power to light em....

As far as burnouts being hard on parts, yes, it's hard on all drivetrain parts. If everything is all stock, something will eventually break. If you have built stuff, it will also eventually break. it will just take them longer. Amdy covered most of this pretty well. Brake stands aren't as hard on engines(unless over revving), but they will hash a tranny though. The tranny builds too much heat and fries the bands and clutches. It's hard on the u-joints. It just puts more pressure on them, especially just before the tires break loose. It's hard on the entire rearend assembly. It puts forces and strain against all the bearings, the gears, seals, clutches and plates(if applicable), and even the axles.

I don't recommend doing alot of just brake stands. I would say the tranny would be the first to go if it's not built with high friction stuff. Honestly though, dont worry about doing a few every now and then. These trucks are built pretty tough, the rearends will take alot of abuse, and the u-joints are actually kinda beefy. I've not broken any yet.

Your 290 hp engine will turn em over pretty easy, and it won't make enough torque to really murder any parts any time soon.

Go here to see a few videos. My black 68 stepper was doing that long on legger with the 260 hp crate engine. It's basically the same as yours, but with a smaller cam. Actually, the cam even had a wiped lobe when I did that.

at the drag races we did for a car show.. i just rolled up in drive.. hit the brakes and then hit the gas.. then when i took off the line i just punched gas and it spun the wheels that way... so doing one is very simple...

Pull into the front yard of someone you really do not care for after a rain or the grass is damp. Then just floor it, even tired old worn out trucks can spin em on wet grass! And you cut really cool ruts for your viewing pleasure!

'cause the trailing arms on a coil-spring truck don't usually hop, leaves will almost always hop.

i dont see why your having a problem i have a fairly stock 350 and can spin 2nd from a roll is your clutch any good

its wierd that my truck wont do any burnout on dry pavement, the only way it does is if the tires are wet or doing a donut. its leave sprung and does have somewhat tall tires but i've gotten other trucks with weaker engines to do burnouts with tires pretty close to the same size, its kinda embarrasing actually.

Just blip the throttle, & pop the clutch.....or let the clutch up easy.....then blip the throttle real hot rods DO have a clutch(old school, but hang on to your azz when you are pullin 6 gears in an old truck) crazy AL

Your sig says intake and cam. What combo are you running? A single plane manifold and radical cam can make it a bit weak on the low end to brake them loose.

You'll do a burnout, but if you keep doing that, you'll break an axle, or destroy your transmission.
