Re: impala steering wheel.

I would imagine the impala steering wheel will work. I am running a 65 nova steering wheel and it bolted right on. The diameter of the hub and column were even the same, it was magic! but ya I believe itll work

i wanted to do the same thing on my 68 but i don't think it will work. the spline is the same but the wheel won't go down far enough without locking up the blinker mechanism.

i think they changed the columns in 67 or 68. it will work on the earlier columns.

if i'm wrong someone please correct me.

yea i looked at mcClinton's truck and i'm not sure if his is a 68 with the marker lights filled in or a big-window 67. IIRC 67 is the same as the earlier columns and 68-72s are a little different and it won't work. (i hope i'm wrong because i wanna do it too)!

I had the idea of a 61' wheel in a custom long time ago and Kevin of Kev's Classics made it happen.

Re: impala steering wheel.

The late 50's and early 60's steering wheels were clean. I can't believe there's only one pic after 14 posts...

Re: impala steering wheel.

My truck was originally a big back window 67 long bed. It had a three on the tree column though so I swapped it to an auto from a local salvage yard. I believe the column is newer for sure. Anyway all the same I believe regardless you can make the wheel work

Re: impala steering wheel.

here is the pre paint wheel kinda a cool sea foam color i scuffed the wheel and paint chips flush with 180 grit sand paper and its important to tape front and rear center hub becaus this is a contact for the horn mechinisim. i shot it with primer then 3 coats of matt black i may do cream or gloss soon imnot sure yet, i cleaned the chrome horn ring with very fine steel wool and ol tooth brush and chrome cleaner

Re: impala steering wheel.

heres the puller you will need to pull your steering wheel. you will need 3 longer bolts to screw into the steering wheel to hold the puller. This one had a 1/2 size end to turn to push the center spline and pull the steering wheel off the splines. i used my 3/8ths electric impact..dumb idea its too fast and i messed up the threads because it set the puller of center and pushed out the corner of the threads also use a flat extension on the end that is going to push on the center spline i used a pointed one and it made thoose divits in the spline center you see in the pics.. .. i used my 3/8ths long handle ratchet instead and it pulled off just fine. i used a 12x20 die to clean up the threads when i installed the nut. people say to buy a new nut but it looked and was fine i just used some locktite blue and reinstalled it. #1 DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE. if you dont you will be sparking and honking the horn any time you touch the horn contact or wheel hub when its installed..

Re: impala steering wheel.

the center contact piece you will need to reuse here is what i had with the 66 belair i bought. i used the horn ring bolts and plastic insulator spacers cause they where in better condition then the ones on the truck

you will need to keep the thin metal contact disc and this faces flat side down and the three prongs facing up on the steering wheel from the bel air.

you will not need the contact pin and plastic shaft piece that was from the old wheel.

. heres the old wheel contact ring on the right and the new old belair style you will reuse on the left.

Re: impala steering wheel.

now MAKE SURE BEFORE YOU PULL THE WHEEL YOUR WHEELS ARE STRAIGHT LOL!
with the old wheel off i installed the new old wheel onto the splines it slid right on. The horn contact pin slides up through a hole through the steering wheel.

Re: impala steering wheel.

i then installed the thin contact disc 3 prongs facing up and line up the holes with the holes on the steering wheel then install the plastic insulator ring and bolt up the horn ring with the horn ring bolts.

Re: impala steering wheel.

after the horn ring is installed i re tapped the threads on the center hub and put blue locktite on the threads and tightend the center hub nut pretty tight dont kill it just make sure its plenty tight. i then installed the horn cap and then your done i have no clearance issues and the wheel although abit bigger than my old one looks awesome.
