Re: 1 ton dually pics post

Interior trim is black, except door panels are white. Truck was appears to be originally white on white, kind of interesting. I have a set of black door panels for it, just haven't put them on.

Flashed - Chardon is about 30 miles East of Cleveland. Strongsville is about a 45-50 min ride from my place.

Greetings flashed, thank you for the kind words.

Yeah the camper was a shame. In it's heyday it was state of the art and slept 6 adults.

The overhead was actually collapsing and resting on the cab. The aluminum exterior had also separated from the frame underneath and was sagging in front of the cab where there was nothing to support it. Fortunately the cab roof survived without damage.

It was all good by me as I wanted the the truck for a stake bed hauler and the poor camper condition brought the price down on this low mile classic.

Here you can see the sag in the overhead and the resulting bulging and distortion in the siding.

A few camper interior shots.

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

Digging even deeper into the frame rot.

Front left overhang with interior plywood removed.

Front right overhang with interior plywood removed. You can also see the severely damaged floor crossmember supports. 2 of them had actually split in two where they were rotted thru.

A real good look at the extent of the damage. Not much left to really support it. In these last two shots you can also see part of the supports I put under the overhead to safely support it while I worked inside.

As I disassembled this beast most of the exterior walls interior paneling laminations had separated from the moisture and it all came off in thin little splintering layers. Quite a few of the assembly screws simply spun in their holes as the threads had disintegrated into rust. Nothing that the trusty little pry bar couldn't handle though.

Sorry for the duplicate pics folks, this forum noob needs to get the hang of posting everything and getting the text between the photos.

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

And back to the actual truck pics.

Yep that's an oil leak underneath. The engine hadn't been started in eight years so to lube the cam lobes prior to start up I filled her up with 5 gallons (yep gallons) of motor oil. The spot is what was left dripping from the overflow out of wherever she spewed out the excess. The excess was drained and level was corrected prior to startup. So now ya know how much oil you can put in a 402 before she will start spilling out.

With the exception of the Cobra 21 Channel CB, Pioneer AM/FM Super Tuner radio, anti-theft door lock knobs, unknown later model steering wheel, replacement wiper blade holders and the darker green exterior repaint she looks all original.

With 38,000 original miles she almost still has a little "new car smell" left. She drives like a dream and with the camper gone, rides like a truck. She runs so well I really love driving her.

On a happy note without the camper the BB/TH400 mileage went up by 2 MPG to 10.2 hwy and about 2-1/4 city, I keep checking to see if I've got a fuel leak but I don't smell any loose vapors or see any drips, puddles or asphalt stains yet. Must be the nature of the beast from a 22 cent per gallon era.

Very cool, I'm guessing a 14 Bolt rear with the newer dually fenders (they look great). What front end does it have? Modified original or a newer chassis? Been toying with the idea of building one like yours.

Thanks

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

We picked one up last week. 68 GMC inline 6 and 4 spd. 62K original miles. x-abulance service rig. Need to find a steel flatbedfor it. It has the 133" wheel base also. No rust in floors or doors, couple small dents in passenger side fender to fix. It also has 18" wheels which I have never seen before. I have two ther 64's and they both have 16" wheels.

The chassis is from a mid eighties 3500 4x4. Not exactly sure which year. We're trying to figure out what direction to go on wheels/tires.

Looks like an excellent find!
Which six?
Are your 16" wheels actually 16" or 16.5"?

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

I believe it has a newer 250 in it. It had a 305 v6 originally which I have in a 63 gmc parts truck. My other wheels are original 16" wheels. These are the only 18" wheels I have seen on c30's they look original and have 18x7.00 tires on them.I am going to find a flat bed to put on it and put it to work. Buff the paint and let it ride. I hope to find the beat up piece of trim on the passenger fender and fix the dents also.

Re: 1 ton dually pics post

Sorry to interrupt this thread, but seeing all of these 1-tons has me all juiced up again...

...I bought a C30 awhile ago, but its frame is toast, so I have talked myself out of fixing it up, despite the fact that Im in love with 67-72 1-tons. I still have it and all of the parts...is there a preferred later year donor for a complete chassis swap (or perhaps 'cab swap')?

thanks in advance!

Here's both of mine. The white 72 is my driver and the patina 68 is going to be a short bed C10 when I'm done with it.
