Rally wheels

Picked up a set of 6 lug15x8 rally wheels today for my 70 C10 build. What are most of you doing to refinish them? I was thinking sandblast and paint or maybe powder coat. Thoughts?

Re: Rally wheels

Going to use trim rings? Scuff them down with 220 and them use filler primer and then 400 to get them even. Paint in your color of choice.

No trim rings? Paint as above or powder coat

I plan to use beauty ring. I figure painting would be the best and probably the cheapest.

Re: Rally wheels

03,
Man, you and I could not be on more parallel paths. I have five of those exact same wheels for my truck. Currently they are under one of my work benches waiting to get to the top of the list.

I'm thinking about having them powder coated if a local place will give me about the same price they quoted a buddy of mine. Mainly because I can drop them off and get them back way sooner than I'd be able to blast and paint them myself.

Re: Rally wheels

Whatever you do, make sure the surface where the tire seats is smooth and clean...

Duplacolor spray can DA1684 is close to Argent silver. I painted some of my Rayy's with it, I am satisfied with the color match...

Different wheels but single stage pewter is what I went with.

Re: Rally wheels

For my '70 K10 I had my rally wheels powder coated orange to match the truck. I also stripped the silver off of a good set of center caps to expose the chrome all the way around. I added 3" trim rings and of course some tires; a set of BFG All Terrain 33X12.5-15.

Re: Rally wheels

I had mine blasted and painted at my work. We have a full paint booth, so they just took care of it for me.

That's fine. It just means they are an early version, like 1975 model year.

I'm probably having mine powder coated too, topped with a clear coat. 3" rings as well. I was considering argent silver, but after seeing your stand-out truck, strikes me if it's possible to match Ochre............hmm. Might look amazing with the drop, deluxe paint/trim and drop.

I was not concerned with trying to stay "Period Correct". These aren't the proper wheels for my truck anyway, so I decided to do what I wanted. Check with your powder coating guy to see. Maybe he can get close. The color of my wheels is not an exact match, but being on the wheels no one can tell. I took in my ash tray and matched the color against a color chart. He got as close as he could and it looks good IMO. I would think your wheels would look awesome in ochre. Thanks for the compliment.

Exactly..............I'll wait until everything else is done to decide. Perhaps too much Ochre? Perhaps not enough Ha! The caps are these, Ochre bow tie. At least I think they're Ochre, pretty close. Screws will be black.

Re: Rally wheels

I've done everything from cup brush on mini-grinder/spray bomb primer/spray bomb argent, to sandblast/bomb primer & argent, to blast/spray gun prime/paint, to blast/powder coat. They all came out really nice. I definitely like the sandblasting and feel it makes whatever else you do work out best. It not only makes it easier, it gives a surface that will grab that finish and hold on tight.

These were blasted and spray bombed.

Re: Rally wheels

If you can sandblast you should, particularly if you are going with a bright finish or bright color. And if you have the money to powder coat, it'll be worth it since there is no doubt it'll last.

I just wirewheeled and sanded my wheels and put a couple coats of rust primer on them. The silver argent didn't suit my truck, so I ended up using an engine enamel color that is kind of green/gray/black/ depending upon the light. Looks good three years later.

Just spray can stuff, you might be going for a higher quality build than me: my truck needs a lot of work and I felt my money would go farther elsewhere.

The repop caps are LMC specials that have actually held up pretty good. I like the look of trim rings, but I never run them because I don't have the heart to scratch my rims. Also, keeping a set of four trim rings in good condition is too stressful for me.
