Nv4500 conversion

I’m wanting to convert my 1981 GMC crew cab from a sm465/np205 to a nv4500/np205 combination. I have no trouble finding the adapters needed, or performing the actual work. What I am having trouble with is finding a reasonably priced nv4500. I am not wanting to pay $2500-3000 for a remanufactured transmission when I can do the rebuild myself for way less. I’m needing one out of a 1996-2005 gm 4x4, or 2001-2005 dodge 4x4 with a gas engine (not a V10). If anyone could point me in the right direction I’d be very appreciative.

Re: Nv4500 conversion

they are hard to find but do come up on craigslist from time to time....I just bought a newly rebuilt one last week...by the time you pay core charge they do get pricey....its cheaper to pay the core charge than buy a junker for a core....
you might also check with http://car-part.com/ ...its a search

Re: Nv4500 conversion

just did this swap in our 79 last year

they pop up on clist from time to time. I lucked out and got mine for $450 I think. BUT i ended up having to get it rebuilt. so I'm into it for close to $2k anyway. if i had to do it over I'd buy a rebuilt one from the start. 2 years unlimited mileage warranty on my rebuild.

Re: Nv4500 conversion

keep a eye open for 88-98 body style trucks that are the W/T = work truck . lots of them had a v6 engine but had a nv4500 in them . my buddy got one for 350-400 bucks once from a guy parting one out . pulled the top cover and it was almost new inside . baby motor and didnt get beat on as much .

Re: Nv4500 conversion

Thanks for the suggestions, I thought 92 was the first year for the nv4500? And in 96 they switched to the higher first gear?

Re: Nv4500 conversion

96 and up is the better of the two....the earlier ones had issues....usually when rebuilt by a trans company they do all the upgrades

Such as? I know 1st gear ratio was too low for most but in my case it's not an issue.

Re: Nv4500 conversion

3rd and 4th syncro rings and 5th gear were the main issues if I remember right...and the low gear 1st was a drawback as well....when I bought my 1st
nv4500 everyone told me to stay away from the early ones and always go with the post 96s
