Gas Tank Question

The gas tank in my 72 Super sounds like it has a quart of sand in it when the fuel gets low. A guy in town has an almost new gas tank from a 65. They look close to the same on LMC, and I am sure there are differences.....but the price is right and I am wondering if it will work.

Re: Gas Tank Question

The problem I see would be the neck coming out of the cab. Early trucks had a rubber hose attached between the tank and the fill tube. You could slide your seat forward and measure the distance between the 3 bolts that hold the tank in and check the 65.

Re: Gas Tank Question

What about the emission hoses coming off my tank? I would suppose I need those. Pretty sure they are not on the 65 tank....

Tank you ! LOL

Re: Gas Tank Question

Evaporative Emission Control (EEC) came along in 1971.

How about removing and cleaning out your tank? It's not hard to do.

I removed my tank by myself, first pumping out the fuel into containers. Use soap or detergent to lubricate the nozzle grommet when removing. My tank was flashed rusted all inside, so I had the tank "renewed" at a local radiator shop.

Re: Gas Tank Question

Your tank is correct for your truck and if it's not leaking I suggest having yours cleaned and sealed.

I've heard that one, it may work but I won't be trying it anytime soon.

The radiator shop boiled out all the gasoline residue, cut two square-shaped holes in the sides, and sand blasted the thing out. *The holes were welded up. Then they coated the inside with a rubbery-type of red substance. They were going to Rhino-line the outside but I opted to spray paint it. It has a lifetime warranty on the process.

One could buy a new Spectre tank for less than what I paid for the process but I'm fine with that.

Re: Gas Tank Question

A new gas tank is $120- $150. Cheap. Not that hard to swap out. I've replaced two tanks in 2nd gen C10's over the years, and just changing the tank the first time didn't cut it, had to do fuel line also. So in the second replaced everything all the way up to the carb. Total of maybe $250 for everything, new. That's my recommendation, I've known a few ppl who have used vinegar to clean out tanks and then coated them successfully, but I'd always go new, personally. Plus in Wichita, you could drive to LMC in Kansas City to pick up a tank and not have to pay crazy shipping.

Oh that's true! I forgot to mention. The mechanic that rebuilt my carb recommended I replace all fuel lines (made my own from NAPA Poly Armor tubing). I also replaced the fuel pump.

I cannot remember and I have not logged down all the truck expenses. I saved most receipts though.

Double flare kit was around $50.00 (needed for your tubing ends).

Tube bender? Ebay.com like $15.00?

Tube cutter? Lowe's $5.00?

Tubing about $30.00 per coil?

Reused all the truck's original tube holders and bolts.

Carb rebuild kit, NAPA, $15.00?

Carb rebuild: $100.00?

Tank renew: $250?

I did buy a Carter fuel pump.

Re: Gas Tank Question

On another vehicle which had a lot of rust in the tank, I took the tank off the car, put a lot of sharp edged gravel in the tank, and shook the heck out of it for several minutes. (thought my arms would never recover). Cleaned out the gravel, then washed inside with high pressure water several times. Finally, put phosphoric acid in the tank and sloshed it around for a while, then let it sit. Drained out the phosphoric acid, rinsed the tank with methyl hydrate, and never had a problem again.

If I was doing it again, I would be inclined to "slosh" the tank with sloshing compound available for this purpose. Basically, the compound coats the inside of the tank with a rubbery layer. It is often used in aviation, and available from restoration supply places.
