Console mounted stereo ?

I would like to put a new stereo in my GMC, but I don't want it in the dash. It has an old 8 track in it now and I want to put something more up to date in it .. but not take away from the vintage feel. I don't want to cut the dash.

Are there any options to mount a new style one in the console or dash / glove box? Pics if you have them please .. and where did you get the mount kit?

Thanks.

Re: Console mounted stereo ?

Here is mine ,I used particle board and covered it with black vinyl.

It works great ,the only downside is that it won't hold a six-pack anymore!

Re: Console mounted stereo ?

I used a "universal" mount trimmed to fit and cut a cover plate out of aluminum to hide the wires

Re: Console mounted stereo ?

i use to have a 8 track under the drivers bucket seat, i did not want to carve up my console , it worked great, i guess a cd player would work there also....and it would not clutter the dash....

Livrat, I like that man.. Looks really good.

May I ask what color the interior is in the pics? Is that Parchment or Sandalwood, etc. ? Thanks.

Re: Console mounted stereo ?

Livrat- More details please. That is one clean looking install. Where did the universal mount come from? is it plastic or fiberglass? etc.
Thanks.

It is parchment.

I got the universal mount at Circuit city. most any stereo shops have them. it was cheaper at CC about $12.. it is made of Plastic

http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=1022

I had to trim some off the bottom of the mount. then I made two little tabs for attaching the top using a small strips of sheet metal, two J-nuts (screw clips for an instrument cluster) to screw the top to the console, drilled two holes in the bottom of the console for the wires, then took a piece of aluminum sheet and and made a "U" shaped cover plate, dyed it all parchment then screwed it to the rib of the console

Re: Console mounted stereo ?

Mine is almost the same as Livrat's. I used a universal under dash kit (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1209990...rdash-Kit.html) to the front. Very minimal trimming need on the mounting kit. I drilled a 1" hole in the bottom of the console for the wires and mounted a 6-disc changer on the left side of the console. I left the mounting kit black.
