S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

Asking for a friend of mine. He has an '01 S-10 with the 4.3 V-6, automatic trans and extended cab. It has a 2 piece drive shaft and he is needing the rear section. Any one parting out such a truck? Has not been able to find one locally. The Cash for Clunkers and the previous high scrap steel prices sent a lot of parts truck to the melting pots.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

the 01 V6 extended cab is a flange pinion mount with a double cardan rear section. thats a real needle in a haystack, and most used units will have the same problem (the double cardan is worn out). I sold just the rear section of one for $150 from a low mileage truck a couple years ago and could have probably asked twice as much with how much my phone rang. you cant easily convert to a one piece because of the crossmember and the proximity of the driveshaft to the floor. plus the length of a one piece can cause problems (harmonics). some guys have converted to the 2wd 4 cylinder ext cab driveshaft which doesnt have the double cardan, but I think you need to change the pinion too and I really have no experience with that swap.

midwest driveshaft http://www.mdsdriveshaft.com/gmc.html sells a replacement with or without the double cardan but its pricey. I have had good luck with driveshaft work at inland truck parts on west k42, their driveshaft guys are great, they call my s10 stuff "toothpicks". dont go in the main door, there is a "driveline shop" door to the left.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

Thanks for the reply. My friend's problem is the rear section of the drive shaft has a pretty good sized ding (aka dent) in it and is causing an imbalance and a vibration when driving. Being retired and on a small income he is hoping to find something that will work for him from someone parting out a similar S-10. Has not been able to find anything locally.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

if his double cardan is good, inland can repair (if needed) and rebalance the driveshaft. a cut and balance no u-joints usually runs me $125, so that might be a good guide.

they will probably want the whole thing, and those arent the easiest to pull. best advice I have for removal is to take the axle/sping u bolts out and pull the axle back a few inches. if you dont, the driveshaft will come very close to coming out but wont. doing it this way also makes it easier to separate the flange from the pinion.

if you need a yoke for the trans to keep all the fluid in I have one he can borrow. I am just north of wichita.

oh one more thing, if he has lowered the truck with blocks, his vibration is likely the center bearing needs shimmed.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

Called and talked to my buddy and he is still looking for a drive shaft. Is your drive shaft complete, both pieces, just the rear section ....? What are you asking for it? Can you post a picture to the board? Communication will be some what slow as he does not have a computer. He is retired on SS so cost of items is a subject for him, hope you understand.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

I will check this weekend to make sure it is still available and try to get a picture. It is the whole driveshaft. Only cost would be to ship it to you or him. It is used it may need joints etc.

That sounds great, please do check if still available and pics are always good. If possible, pics of the u-joint sections would be good. Maybe break it down at the double cardon joint and ship wrapped together in cardboard? Let me know what you come up with. Thanks

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

Good info, I am getting ready to scrap a 2001 S-14 and it has the 2 pc driveshaft. I will remove for the future use or future scrap.

Re: S-10 Drive Shaft Needed

If you have room to store it I think I would keep it around for awhile. Good original parts usually have someone looking for them. Sorry my buddy didn't pick it up from you when he was looking for such. Didn't intend to string you along when I first posted the WTB for him.
