Re: cuttin' coils

Buy air bags and be done with it. I had cut coils for 8 years and the bags are WAY better. Just run the air lines to the glovebox till ya can afford the tanks and compressor

if you cut a front coil spring enough that it bottoms out then you got bigger problems than just ride quality.

Re: cuttin' coils

Yep and when you jack it up with a coil that is cut too much it will be loose enough to fall out or fall out of place.

Re: cuttin' coils

OK, so I finally found some time to get some work done. This weekend I replaced all the ball joints, and shocks. I got 2 of my slots intalled as well. Still have some polishing to do on the other 2. I also cut one wrap out of the front coils. The general consensus was that you can get somewhere between 1.5-2.5 inches of drop from cutting one wrap. I got around 1.5". I was hoping more for the 2.5 mark, but it looks ok. Plus I still haven't taken it out on the road yet, so the springs may settle a bit more. I wanted to replace the 40 yr old ball joints anyway, and that was the main reason for this endeavor. I will probably go around 2.5 in the back to level it out. On a side note, I guess MOOG has decided to throw away quality control and sell crap. tried 2 sets of ball joints before I just bought the store brand, 3 out of 4 MOOG joints pulled so far in that the cotter pin was 1/4 in above the castle nut. One of the joints came with the wrong size nut! Store brand fit like OEM. Made in China or not, they still fit better than MOOG. Ball joint press is the only way to fly! Sorry for the novel, I'll post some pics in a couple weeks when I get the rear sorted out.

Re: cuttin' coils

i cut my front springs two full loops sittin' on 20's and it's a little stiff but no issues with rubbing, wouldn't want to drive a real long trip, but for cruising around town i love it! the back i found a pair of drop springs

Re: cuttin' coils

WOW how big are those wheels? Mine didn't get near that much drop. I have 225/70/15's on it right now, and I have about 2" from the fender lip to the tire.

Out of curiousity... what keeps the spring from jumping out from under the frame? Before I would cut a rear spring, I would buy a new one. Safety first.

It almost looks like someone put front springs in the rear?

Wow. I was waiting for someone else to notice. I would think those coils would jump right out of there with no retainer on the top.

Re: cuttin' coils

Definitely does look like a set of fronts, but the taper at the bottom says they aren't...i cut my fronts 1 1/2 coils and heated the rear. It rides great on the highway and for the most part in town, the two things that suck about the ride (1) on very bumpy roads or potholes, it does bottom out. (2) With the heated rear springs, I can't put squat for weight in it. Ran 4 60 lb sand bags for the winter and it rode like crap and was sitting lightly on the bump stops. I am going bags on it and don't have the cash to do it right now so I will sport it anyway.

Re: cuttin' coils

1 ring off the bottom of the front springs, trimmed bumpstops, & home brew shock relocators, flip on the rear,4 leaf stack(tossed the bottom 4),& relocated the spring hangers on the rear. Also shock extender brackets on the rear. Some guys may say getto.....but anybody that has rode in my old truck ,comments on how she rides! Toss 1 1/2 " channel, & 4" chop top on that, & the old longhorn IS pretty low(on the budget)crazyAL

Re: cuttin' coils

just a tip to all you fellow front coil cutters out there. try popping out the bump stop and trimming an inch or so off it. in my truck i didnt notice any difference in ride doing that and cutting 1 1/2 coils. imoe cutting 1 1/2 coils is about the max you can get some ride quality out of and still get it to align properly.

Re: cuttin' coils

well I did this years back the rear worked out fine the front needed more spring imo welded the rear coils and heated the front springs. the front sat on the bump blocks wished I would of wen drop springs but if you can handle the ride its not that bad

Yall are right, there is nothing holding the spring up top only the truck itself only bolted at the bottom and they are factory rear springs (like said earlier)just cut, i personally have not drove my wife's 67 yet (pulled motor when i bought it) but i can see the chance of someting moving if hit the right way while driving, my buddy drove his 72 like that until he sold it and no problems this truck was my buddys brother in law so thats where he got the idea but i think i will get a set of new lowering springs when the time comes! springs are cheaper than other truck parts, and my or the wife's parts lol

Re: cuttin' coils

If I had the cash, I would definitely foot for some lowered springs. Make sure you get lowered shocks regardless of the way you lower it. The stock shocks won't compress enough and definitely will alter the ride. I installed a set of shocks for something, one of the advantages of knowing parts guys and just giving them measurements.
