Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

I run the Wix/Napa Gold. But I'd run a PF25 in a restored truck

Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

I would be careful of filters that are "made by WIX." I'm sure the NAPA Gold filters are top rate. However, some of the "private label" filters WIX makes (e.g. CarQuest) are not the same quality as the 51060/51061. You can read about that on the BobIsTheOilGuy forum.

Also, I read where AC filters have been made by Champion for many years now, and are not the highest quality. They're nothing like the old PF25 (short) and PF35 (long) that used to be the standards.

Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

I figure they all filter oil, and on a restored show queen any difference in quality just wouldn't matter. But sorry to hear the AC filters are junk now. Those were what I always used till about the last 10-15 years

Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

I guess my first qualification is "Not Fram". But I normally buy Supertech, Wix, or Napa) I learned something a week or so ago, I went into Napa for a filter, and they sold the same filter two ways.....one in a box, one bulk plastic wrapped. $1 cheaper for the one without the box. For oil, I run the Warren distribution oils sold in either the Tractor Supply Traveller brand, or Supertech (same stuff). Been running that for years with no issues, even their diesel oils in a diesel tractor. I used to be a hard core name brand oil guy, but got over that years ago, and save a ton.

Thanks for all your input.
If you got a O'Reilly's Auto Parts near by you can get the Microgard 51060 for $6.49
As you can see by the part number Wix makes O'Reilly's filters too. I use the
O'Reilly filters on all my vehicles

Nice find but I would be worried the paper element would be degraded and cause filtering issues on the older ones.

I use a PF35 on my smallblocks.
It's just a little extra oil and a little extra filter.

Warren Oil in West Memphis, AR is one of my customers. Maybe I need to see if they give out large, free samples!

Based on my daily driver car that I put just short of 400,000 on, I am sold on it, and run it in everthing I own. Since I have owned that car, it has never had a name brand oil in it, and engine never apart, and uses zero oil between 4,000 mile changes (non-synthetic). I used to purchase it in 5 gallon pails at TSC for roughly $35 each, but price went up, and it is now less expensive to just buy the 5 quart jugs. I have retired now, but was driving roughly 500 miles a week, so changes came often. Not long ago, with Rock Auto or Supertech filters, 4 quarts of oil, cost of a change with filter was $10 or $12 or in that range.

Can you still get a PF35?
The longer filter was more of a challenge to uninstall on a 292 L6 because the frame on the passenger side gives you little more than a 1-1/4'' clearance, but the extra volume was worth it.

Yeah.
I haven't bought one in a while.
I looked it up and the parts stores have them.

Grumpy -- Does K&N make a longer filter like the PF35 or the Wix 51060 -- the one quart size?

[EDIT] I was in Walmart the other day and looked at K&N 3003 and 3004, but I had no way of knowing if it would thread on a GM engine.

Check Post #17, MARKDTN says they're discontinued.
They might still be on the shelves, but no more after that.

I missed that post.
That makes sense.
There is 14 left on the Rain forest place.
And they want $26.82 for them.

I only use AC Delco and AMSOIL filters. You can still get PF35L filters that hold a full quart- they're a little pricey now but I run those on my 350. The daily drivers get AMSOIL filters.

The AC PF25 that I just purchsed - the Blue ones were made in 95 in USA per the box.

Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

We used to run Napa gold or wix, who ever could get it to me the fastest, but the local Napa sold out to corporate and everyone left, including us as a $50k year commercial customer. Their service went straight to hell. Our other supplier sells Wix and we get a great price on them so that's what I run on everything. Except when I had my Duramax, I ran a mobile 1 filter, was it needed, probably not.

Re: Oil Filter of choice for your V8

I did not realize that the PF35L was still available. Learned something new. The PF25 and PF35 were both discontinued about 20 years ago. I bought the last 5 PF25s at a Kmart then and still have 2 left I think. But the PF35Ls are expensive from what I can see. I'll stick with the Wix replacement. For extra capacity that long one I mentioned earlier is nice, that is the one used on C40s and bigger in the 70s/80s. I used to run it on my K20 square body and it didn't cost any ground clearance. The PF1218 is the Delco replacement for a PF35 and is available on Amazon and other places for a reasonable price. I have not used one in a long time because it is more PF25 size and I want all the filter media I can get. Probably not necessary as the LS filters are smaller diameter and those last forever, but I like a bigger filter that makes me feel better about it.
