Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

Has anyone here cut 12 inches out of their 60-66 fleetside long bed or seen a truck that had been altered in this way? If so, where was the cut(s) made and how does it look? I would love to see any pics if you have them.

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

Someone on here has a sweet light green/turquoise 7-foot fleet side. I can't remember the name and it would take me all day to go through the threads, maybe he'll chime in. You take 12 inches from right behind the cab. To go to full short bed, you take 12 inches from behind the cab and 8 inches between the rear wheel well and tailgate. The long bed fleet side has larger rear wheel openings than the short bed does, so when you shorten the bed it doesn't look exactly right. The 7-foot bed looks just right in my opinion....

Thanks for that info! My buddy, who is a hotrod guru, felt the same way about taking a foot from the front. I would just like to see one to get a sense of the proportions before we go on the attack.

I've tried hard to find a pic of a 7' bed.
Still haven't found one.

I think 8 and 4 would be just right, you want the rear overhang to be a little shorter than the length of the cab to the front of the wheel well.

Re: Shortening a long bed fleet to 7 foot question

I have a long fleet bed, and my 65 is a shortbed.
So I have to take the full 12 out in front of the wheel, but in the rear I might only take 6 out.
I'll experiment with ol'skool's pic.

@ol'skool,
is your wheel well in the pic at the long bed length?

Damn, that looks great! Do you mind putting the original picture in the same post as the chop for comparison.

I haven't seen that method before and it looks much better than cutting both ends, plus it has to be much easier. Thanks for the pic's!
