Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

Not many rats in this part of Canada(a few 2 legged ones) but lots of mice. I use mothballs to kick the mice out....make some trays out of aluminum foil, fill with mothballs and set in cab and they will be gone in no time.
I have trays of mothballs in all my vehicles that sit outside or in the non sealed buildings.
When I vacuum out their handy work I use a shop vac with the extra long hose (got from Home Depot) keeps the vac exhaust well away from you.

Large sticky sheet with a piece of Tootsie Roll is what I use put it ion either floorboard.
With the amount of Green Poison blocks you said have been consumed, you have/had more than one rat.

Peppermint oil. Use liberally and they will leave on their own. It will also help cover up the smell for a while until you can get it cleaned.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

a huge rat trap with peanut butter mixed with poison. if it's only 1, it will get him. but if there's more, after killing a few they learn not to eat the poison or mess with the traps

No luck with the bucket trap last night. May go another night with it or may go to ozone, I have not decided yet.

Good luck, it will be worth it once you've gotten them them out and cleaned the truck. I would definitely pressure wash it, that way you wash out all of the nastiness left behind and don't make it airborne by sweeping/vacuuming.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

So yesterday afternoon I found it dead beside the truck. I still put in 2 glue traps and 2 Vicktor spring traps with peanut butter and the 5-gal bucket trap is still there just in case. Hopefully the rats are gone, but if not I still have traps active. If no action in a few days, I will vacuum then ozone and then throw some moth balls in there.

In my humble opinion you will want to tear everything from that interior out down to the bare metal. Clean everything good and reassemble with anything that is not destroyed from the rats defecating on everything.

Mark,
Glad to hear you got your rat. It is amazing how desctructive they can be. I'd bet $100 that you couldn't stop smiling when you found him dead.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

Once you get rid of the rodents and cleaned up, Use "Odor Xit" and spray the whole cab, everywhere you found traces of the rat or mice. This stuff works great for all orders.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

I have had issues here and after trying everything known to mankind it dawned on me........
A few times a year I crank one of the old trucks , make sure all doors and windows are shut good and let it run all night,..carbon monoxide kills the hell out of them or they just leave.

Coffee grounds will help with the smell. But that whole interior and heater box has to come out and cleaned. Wear a mask, it's nasty $%&#.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

(probably last) update-as of this morning there are no other traps tripped or rodents stuck in glue or in the bucket. Maybe there was just the one? I'm going to get in there this weekend and clean. The smell inside is really more like a hay barn than anything offensive. May stick the ozone machine in there Thursday night. Appreciate all the advice and encouragement.

I don't have a photo, but the body was about the length of a square-point shovel. Maybe not quite as big as I first thought-but as with many of life's problems, perhaps it just seemed bigger than it really was.

Re: How to get rid of a rat in new-to-me truck

Please dispose of that dead sucker properly.

The problem with poison is the rat dies somewhere, then gets found and eaten by a cat or dog, and that animal will get sick from the poison inside the rat and die also. Vets have an anti-dote for most rat poisons but sometimes its too late to save your pet.

Yes rats and mice can carry hantavirus, but not all of them have the virus, only a small percentage. Just use a dusk mask during cleaning.

Yank out the seats and panels, and disconnect battree. Wear a dusk mask, everybody has those now, and spray the inside of the cab down with soap and water then scrub with a soapy rag and rinse. Then suck it all out with a shop vacuum. Its the fine dust that has the hantavirus, so once its wet you can't inhale it. Clean out all the heater ducts with a shop vaccuum. You can put an extra hose on the exhaust on the vacuum and shoot it away from the truck

When all the crap is gone, evaluate the condition of the wire harness.

Maybe you nipped it in the bud . Best you can do is get the respirator and gloves on, clean it up and keep your eyes open. Good luck🤞
