Want some opinions on the best rear end to put on a 1970 c10 LWB. Thinking a 9 in. ford 3.73. Don't know much about manufactures though. What's your opinion?

The stock 12 bolt with an upgraded or rebuilt posi-traction rearend is hard to beat. They're pretty tough unless you're throwing A LOT of torque at them.

The reason people like the ford 9" is the easy of changing rear gears. They are also strong and have a good aftermarket. If your not going to be playing with rear end gearing a 12 bolt will work.

9" will rob a bit of power in comparison to the 12 bolt from what I've read. My builder says he can build my 12 bolt to live behind 700ft lbs, just waiting to hear on the cost.

Well this is going in a different direction. Lol. But thanks for the input. I guess all the ford 9 in talk has been thrown in my face so much I kind of over looked just upgrading my 12 bolt. I think that's the route. Plus that just means it's all gm parts.

Back on track..... A 3.73 in a 12 bolt would be a lot of fun on the street.

If you wanted to go crazy, there's even a popular 12 bolt build that utilizes the best of both a 12 and a 9 inch. Involves cutting axles and c clip eliminates, but it yields a monster.

When I looked into it, a 12 bolt cost the same as a 9 inch. And in the end it is a better, easier and better aftermarket support.

However dad always said if you're not going to hook it, you'll never break it.

I have a GM 12-bolt, a Dana 60, and a Ford 9-inch. All with big blocks. I've never broken any of them!

In terms of easiest to work on, the Ford wins that, but I've never -had- to service the D60 or 12-bolt, so does it really matter?

Your comment contradicts itself...The GM truck 12-bolt posi in my opinion is second only to the legendary car 12-bolt. The only difference between the two are car 12's had larger diameter pinions, 1.438" vs 1.625" and thinner tube wall thicknesses...In any case if you start twisting pinion shafts, the Dana 60 is the only other option IMO. I would never stick a Ford 9" under my trucks, but that's just me...As the above post reflects, only the 9 required working on?

Dana60 is always my answer. All the talk about Ford 9" is because they were so commonly used (and tough out of the box). The Dana60 in other than full-floating under a 3/4t truck is not so common. Ever see Ford use the 9" in a 3/4t? What went behind the Monstrous Mopars in the era? Yep, Dana60! Ummm hmmm, she's got one sweet rear!!!
