Re: 1963 C-10 SWB BBW Fleetside in NC

SC title arrived today, so I'll get down to DMV either tomorrow or Monday and then I have the green light to really start working on this build. So close.....hard to wait.

Re: 1963 C-10 SWB BBW Fleetside in NC

Chains came out great after a 3 day soak in vinegar. I've changed my formula up a little....75% vinegar and 25% clr. It has cut the soak time down around 30% and the parts come out just as nice. Rust prevention and primer/paint this weekend.

Goal is to just reassembly the truck and replace what parts are missing and get it to start, stop and steer while I complete the stepside.

Had to straighten out a few links, but I think the OEM chains will stay around for awhile. I normally replace w/stainless steel, but to just get the truck complete...these will work. The mounting bolts appear to be stainless steel and look brand new after soaking.

Very good info. So did you use regular vinegar or cider? And what is the approximate soaking time? I was thinking I could try this on my my headers. At least the collector part at the bottom where all the tubes come together. It will be pretty hard to sandblast down in there.

thats a nice truck. i've been looking for a 63 for a while now. i love the A pillar and how it makes all the angles match. from the side, the truck looks like its moving fast.

really like your truck, looking to see what you do. too bad your fayetteville is in a different state. i'd be over there.

just plain old white vinegar....i get it from the local dollar store. start with a day or two....and then pull them out. all of the projects ive done so far let the vinegar work....if couldnt clean it with light wire brushing or a thumbnail, put it back in for another day or two.

thanks, just glad i was able to work the title out...the interstate transfer are always more involved than in state. still working out which direction to go with it, but i have most of what it'l need to get it complete. yeah, too bad we're not closer, wouldn't mind the help or helping another local guy out with projects

I'm going to give it a try on the headers and my chains.

Re: 1963 C-10 SWB BBW Fleetside in NC

let me know how it works out. Got the tailgate cleaned out of all the loose debris and the hardware installed. Got the pass side tailgate chain on....waiting on the inner bracket for the chain bolt before I can install the driver side. Got the tail light assemblies on also. Other than that, most of the work today was on the stepside.

Re: 1963 C-10 SWB BBW Fleetside in NC

Some pics of the little bit of progress I got done this weekend on the back end. The rear bumper brackets will both need replaced...and still have to find a bumper. The tailgate is actually pretty solid except for the two small holes over the "C" in Chevrolet. New trunions and bolts for all the hardware. I have the driver side chain and bolt also. So a couple more pieces of the missing puzzle put in place. Still have a bed full of parts to finish sorting through. Luckily I have a big bag of misc 60-66 bolts on hand from the last two parts trucks!!!

2 hours in line at NC DMV today.....oh joy. Titles have been transferred, truck is registered...now I just have to wait between 5-10 days for a DMV officer to come to the house to visualize the cab & frame VIN's and we are all set.

Re: 1963 C-10 SWB BBW Fleetside in NC

We'll...its not listed as non-operable which is more in depth with the state. Since I was able to piece it back together prior to NC DMV involvement, its just a titled truck that's not registered...even though they give you registration....which is even more confusing. So no tags/insurance required. And yes, they'll come to you...at least in Cumberland County. I went and made the appointment right after going to DMV....the stolen plate / stolen vehicle bureau is the ones who come out. They told me they'd contact me within 5-10 days to come out and lay eyes on the frame & cab vins....which both match.

I'll let you know down the road if I decide to not build it Rich...just trying to get it NC legal and complete for now.

I'm with ya..I'm not looking forward to the bull crud I'll have to go through to get my 66 licensed, registered, and insured...just more money going to the government so they can waist it. But nice work on the truck anyway...I'm noticing some TLC will be needed.

Yeah, will need some TLC. Ive been giving it some here and there now that the title issues are sorted out. Its got more patina than rust even though the pics don't look great. The title process is a must for me...a lot of people put it off, but I don't want to waste time or money to not be able to title it down the road. So if I have to jump through hurdles anyways....I'd rather get them over with. Digging through the bed yesterday, I have at least 3-4 cowl panels, a few fender extendsions, pair of front fenders and 1 inner fender. The front end on it now was off a 61 parts truck I had. A ton off oddball parts in a few 5 gallon buckets.

Off top....brakes will need rehabbed all the way around.
Outer tie rod on the driver side.
New e-brake linkage from crossmember and all cables.
Engine bay wiring and tail light wiring.
Steering shaft.
Master cylinder converted to dual from single.
Rear bumper & mounts.
Some of the cross sills in the bed will need replaced.
Rear glass needs replaced.
Driver side vent is broken ( I have a spare).
Other than that, it should be fairly easy. I have most off the small stuff that it needs other than the time on the cosmetic and body work.

That's a good list for TLC. The good thing is you have all the parts so just the time to get it done. Sometimes its harder to find time than it is money. And you have two going on. I wouldn't be able to focus. One is hard enough to focus on!

Those are just the obvious issues I have seen to get it mechanically running (minus engine/trans which I have).

And two is like having twins....twice as much work.

I'll keep it in mind Rich and let you know. Ruger Blackhawk is a good model.

Did get the stepside pulled out from under the carport and rinsed off. Will drive it a few more weeks until ready for the engine/crossmember swap. A few pics of the 2 63's together.

My dad has bluing tanks in his gunsmithing shop. I did a ton of it growing up working weekend when not at my regular job.
