I knew of a '69-ish GMC 4wd with the 4-53. So,transmission may not be too hard to mate

Re: detroit diesel swap???????

US Army Gamma Goats had 4-53's mated to SM465's. I wondered at the time (late 70's) what it would be like to have one in my '65 LWB C10.

Re: detroit diesel swap???????

Seems like there are 3 different SAE bellhousings that are useful for the detroit diesel swaps. I'd love to pop one in the 69 and cruise it up and down the road.

I've been thinking if I find a 4-53T first, it'll be swapped into the 69 C10 and if I find a 3-53 first, that will be under the hood of the 87 S10.

good luck

Re: detroit diesel swap???????

For all you guys that love diesels and two strokers. Look up 2 psycho truck pull. This guy put an 8v92 in a 70-72 chevy. The motor is twin turboed with a blower and is cranking out over 1500HP. He comes to all the truck pulls in Utah. One of my most favorite truck to watch pull.

Re: detroit diesel swap???????

Hi one ton wrecker. Take a look at my build . It has pics of a buddies 56 gmc with a detriot. I can answer any questions you may have abt it.

Detroits sure are cool. Narrow powerband tho. Will deffinately need a aux trans or 2 spd rear so you can double ur shifts.

Re: detroit diesel swap???????

One ton, I think the best route for you would be either a 3-53 or a 4-53. Most everything else Detroit is going to be almost too heave for the stock suspension. If you would be ablte to luck out and find one already hooked to a trans, I would try to go that route. GM did use them in the late 70's in their big trucks. Usually hooked to a 5 speed. Cool projext!!
