Cool 6.5 deisel/$l80 E trans-swap in to mid 60s hauler

I want to swap a 6.5 turbo diesel/4L80 trans ( 1994 or 1995)into a 66 Chevy C 60 hauler with a drag axle /and a peterbuilt cab(will look like a 33 model chevy truck on steroids if I can get the front cap right).I want to keep my standard style wiring harness and ditch the electronic harness. I also need to know what is required to put the all mechanical pump- etc on it to get away from as many/ or all electronics as I can. The trans will be easy- they already make a stand alone harness /programer for it.
I need to know all parts and mods( to get the machanical pump and ditch anything electronic that I can) . I have a really nice pullout no miles and in great condition. Not looking for huge power just consistant/dependable power . Obviously room is not a factor.
Any and all help is welcome.

I can't tell you for sure every part you'll need for that swap as I don't mess with the GM diesels much. I'm sure some others will chime in and be able to tell you everything you need to know. Definitely sounds like a sweet project to me.

You will need a 6.5 mech ip pump and lines. The best pump is a 93 last year for mech. You will need the obvious like hoses and linkage. Only two wires cold advance and turn on. Make sure you time it. Don't think about upping boost with out studs.

Thanks for the information. Will the 6.2 fuel pump and lines work in the 6.5 turbo. I have. access to several of those. Do I need to change the harmonic balancer???? I have heard that this is a potential problem. Again I want to get rid of as much electronic stuff as I can. Thanks again

Maybe it's me but I don't see the advantage of eliminating the PCM to run a stand alone trans module.

Yes the pumps had some problems in '94 but that has been sorted out by now.

Simple. The 4l80 trans is a basic turbo 400 with overdrive and a lock up converter. It's already paid for and common/ among the strongest out there and the only way to use it is the stand alone set up/ or it's the simplest and cheapest way. This going in a early peterbuilt cab. This is a simple set up for fun. I wanted something that I can run a simple painless wiring harness With the old gauges and the correct look that a hauler in the 60s would have with two gassers on back. It will have air conditioning and that is it. I am not racing the tow truck. And I like different.

You can not use a 6.2 fuel pump it will not supply enough fuel. Injectors can be different depending on years. And yes change the dampener.

The db4 ip will flow alot more fuel then a mech ip but can have problems. The simple and probably most reliable way is a mech pump. Plus with the stand alone trans controller you can change the shift point easily.

Thanks for that information.I knew the electronic pump would produce more flow / pressure / etc. But I want a straight forward simple set up and ultimate power is not the goal. Thanks for the info on the balancer. On the race track it is one of the first things we replace. Didn't know if diesels produced enough rpms to warrant it. Again you have been most helpful.

If the dampner is bad on a 6.2/6.5 diesel the crank will break.

If you can't find a good used mech pump, ive heard good things about Conestoga Diesel. They gave me a smoking deal on a db2 pump if I traded in my electronic pump. But my plans changed. Give them a call.

I have found a 1992 truck with a 6.5 turbo diesel in it. I did have the wrecking your check the serial numbers on dash. If they did put the 6.5 turbo in the 92s ( can someone confirm) will this pump and injector lines etc work on my late 6.5 turbo to get rid I the electronics and computers ?

92 first year for 6.5. Pump will work on electronic 6.5 to get rid of the electronic ip. Remember check casting number on block to see if it is a crack prone block.
