Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I saw a show on TV where they fixed something similar with a special paint and just taped off what they didn't want painted. Another method that they used was to actually solder a jumper wire from the beginning to the termination spot.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

If you have a spare printed circuit laying around you could try cutting back the top layer of plastic on the damaged one, cut a longer piece of copper trace that will over lap the damaged portion then just super glue a piece of plastic over it to hold it down. If that doesn't work you might have to solder it..

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I've soldered those traces before, but it isn't easy since the surrounding plastic melts too. Get some silver epoxy, it is conductive and will repair that. Just scrape some of the plastic over the good area and lay down a bead.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Took a deep breath and went for it. I tried to dig the plastic off the copper with a razor blade but couldnt get that to work. I sliced down both sides of the copper and lifted each end up and as I was pulling them up gently, the copper came loose from the plastic on the underside. I pulled them both up almost a half an inch and leaving them standing straight up and was able to tin them. I stripped a section of wire and took several strands and wound them together and tinned the whole length of it. I bent the copper piece over almost flat and laid the wire on top of it and heated it just till it stuck on both ends and it actually turned out pretty good. I think I got lucky!

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

I honestly cant remember, I have mixed and matched up so many different pieces to get what I wanted in the dash I have lost track. In the little square box above the speedo/tach I took out "glow plug and water in fuel" and put in tow/haul and check trans indicators. I searched through the warning light plastics and came up with the 4 wheel drive and brake indicators. I actually cut that out of two different pieces and stuck them in. The plastic dash piece that holds the gauges didnt have a hole for the brake warning light and I drilled it in and carved it out so the light would go in it. The printed circuit had the place for the bulb so that part was easy. I had to cut out the back for the air gauge too. Its a heinz 57!

It gets to see daylight!!

It was such a nice day here today that I had to see if it could get itself out of the shop. Milk crate seat and all!! Tried the bed on and discovered I need to lower the goose neck hitch about an inch to get the bed down. Drill two new bolt holes in each side, sounds simple enough right? But in order to get the side brackets to go lower I have to do some trimming on them to clear the front bolts on the air bags, then I have to cut the exhaust pipe apart in three places and lower it where it goes over the axle and fit it all back together again, then change the length on the level control valve. Just to lower the hitch one inch....no wonder this thing is taking me so long to finish, but it was sure nice to drive it out of the shop!!

It's always something. 1 thing that you think will take 5 minutes turns into 5 more things and 6 weeks. That's a great feeling to drive your project around a bit. Keep at it!

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Yup two steps forward and one step backward. I got the exhaust pipe cut down, that was a pain cutting into basically 4 elbows and making them not as sharp and not as tall, got it tacked together enough to take it off and I can finish welding it up later. Got the hitch lowered and my nephew came over this afternoon and helped me get the bed on, which is visual progress if nothing else. Still got to fasten it down, get the fuel necks fastened in, get the wiring on the bed redone and plugged into the harness on the frame, and get the exhaust pipe back on. My son came home from college with the blazer this afternoon and since the sun was shining, (in between spring snow storms) I decided we better line up the fleet and get a pic of them all. First time all four were mobile at the same time!
So for my one step backward for the day, as I was driving it back to the shop, I turned the wheel all the way so I could see how sharp it would turn and found out yes the pump does have too much pressure for the hydroboost system . Blew the accumulator apart on the hydrobooster and christened the side of my nice clean motor with its first bath of oil I guess a system that likes 1500 lbs of pressure doesnt like a pump thats set at 2200 lbs of pressure. Think Rockauto will warrantee it for me??

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Very nice line up. That's really cool that they're all red and white too! That's a bad deal on the accumulator. I found this in my searches, and it may be what you need to fix your problem.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Something like that would do the trick but that particular one has too small of lines I think. I am going to pull the pressure relief valve out and see if I can do something to it to lower the pressure down to about 1500. I started working on the rear doors the other day. I took the deep tint windows out of an old parts suburban that I have so I can use them in the crew. Those things are kind of a pain in the ass to r&r and the glass channels and wipers are junk so now I gotta get some new ones before I can put them back together. I bought new door harnesses from a guy on here, gmachinz, and got it installed in one door. They are kind of a pain too. was able to get it stuffed through after removing the connectors on the one end. With the doors stripped out I stuck some dampner tiles on the inside of the outer door skin to kill some noise. I cant go any further with the doors now till I get the window stuff so I decided to work on the sound/heat insulation stuff on the floor boards. I needed to see how much more product I need to finish the job so I stuck everything in I had. First layer is the dampner tiles, followed by closed cell foam, which is supposed to isolate the metal from the mass loaded vinyl which is supposed to work really good to make it quiet inside, time will tell. Next I am putting a layer of foil faced insulation then the mass loaded vinyl goes over that followed by a thin layer of jute the the carpet. This sucker is going to be deathly silent inside! Kinda like that scene in Ace Ventura where he is at the hotel and is demonstrating how the soundproof glass works, haha!.

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Very nice! I am in the process of trying to figure out what I want to put in the 72 for sound deadener. I don't want to break the bank as I'm trying to just drive the sob this summer. Haha

Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Well I got stalled on my interior projects for a bit. Had to replace the glass channels in both back doors, the glass channels down inside have flattened themselves out and wont stay in the metal tracks so when the windows go down they wedge themselves into the the channels and try to force the rubber back into the tracks. Now I know why my suburban rear windows wont go down either, probably the same issue. I ordered enough sound insulation stuff to finish the cab and doors and ordered new glass channels and inner and outer wipers. So while I am waiting on that, I went over to the dunes again and "utterly wasted" 4 hours riding 3 wheelers again. I took my son who had never been to the dunes with me and he had a ball. We been riding out in the desert on the 3 wheelers a few times and he did great on the dunes with it. Got some cool pics too. The rainbow one is my favorite but it makes me mad that I cut the top off a little, o well. Just for S&G I sent it to the weather guy and 10 minutes later he used it on the news, pretty funny!

Whats behind door #1...

A hell of a lotta work! Got all the pieces in for the rear doors and got the first one mostly done. Recap: gutted both rear doors, also gutted both rear doors on my parts suburban for misc pieces but mostly the tinted glass. Cleaned inside and outside of door so things will stick to it. Stuck down dampening tiles on inside of the outer door skin, turned it from a ringing sound to a dull thud. Glued foil faced bubble insulation over the tiles. Replaced door lock actuator and lubed latch and locking mechanism up. Installed new glass channel in door frame. Installed qtr window then installed divider track. Installed window and got the divider track worked onto it and bolted down. Stuck regulator in and got arms in tracks then went to bolt it down and discovered the two lower bolt holes for the regulator werent drilled in the door which is wierd as the driver side door had them. Hooked a pigtail up to the regulator and watched the window glide up and down effortlessly in its new glass channels! I bought some JL Audio 4" coax speakers with the idea of putting them in the door somewhere in the area where the ash tray currently resides in the door. Turns out that the spot where they needed to go in is over an indentation in the door where the spring part of the regulator sits and there was enough depth behind the panel for the magnet to fit. Got a piece of closed call foam and cut it to fit then cut a piece of mass loaded vinyl to go over that and I think the door panel will go on ok with all that behind it. I need to cut out a donut out of plywood to go between the door panel and the metal door skin so I can screw the speakers through the plywood and into the door skin to anchor them solid so they wont vibrate in the plastic door panel. I get that done then I can put the door panel on for good and have one done! The grey door panel sure looks alot nicer than the icky maroon panel on the front door! Am wondering if the speaker would look better grey instead of black?

Nice work. I think it might look better gray but not a deal breaker IMO.

Gray would be more modern. Of course if you really want to go Retro, then cut out for some 6"x 9"s in the lower portion of the door.

Door #2

I made a plywood spacer on the first door that fits between the door panel and the door skin. When I put the speaker in for good I will drill the plywood out and use long enough sheet metal screws to screw into the door skin and suck the panel tight against it so hopefully it wont vibrate. I moved to the other rear door and got the new glass channel in it and the window all back in. Had to hook a battery to it and test it out, success!!

Unhappy Re: 86 chevy crew cab 12 valve swap

Just going around in one big circle right now between school buses, tractors, farm equipment, and the farm itself. Was looking forward to summer a few months back now I cant wait for winter to get here! I got carpet for the pickup a month ago and would love to get it down while the weather is hot, seem like carpet relaxes nice in 80 degree weather locked in a nice hot cab with the windows up but I dont know if thats going to happen or not. Dont think I will have any free time till after Labor Day at this point.
