Rear Axle I.D. Confusion - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was trying to pull the axle codes the other day, because I need to change the cover gasket. I have read about casting locations and couldn't find the code that is supposed to be on the passenger side of the rear axle. What gives? I was able to pull a couple of numbers off the axle. One was on the carrier itself, passenger side, facing towards the front and it read GM 30. The other number I found was on the driver's side axle tube, facing towards the front. Will these numbers tell me anything? I'm thinking that this rear axle isn't the original.

I've had the same issue........can't find any numbers.....

The number I found on the left side as described above is: 1405525.

95 percent sure thats the same number thats on my 12 bolt. if its not a 3rd member (gears ubolt and drop out the front) then count the bolts . its either 10 12 or 14.

Mine is a 10 bolt. I'm not seasoned on rear ends yet, but I have a posi that I would like to throw in if possible. I just wanted to figure out what rear end I had before I tear into it. I have searched all over the web with these 2 casting numbers and have had no luck.
