6 lug wheels on a c20?

I just looked at a '71 GMC...the VIN identified it as a 3/4 ton Fleetside, but it had 6 lug spoke wheels. I assume the spokes to be aftermarket, but 6 lug? Shouldn't they be 8 lug for a 3/4 ton?

3/4 ton should be 8 lug.

Re: 6 lug wheels on a c20?

The VIN is KE 234-Z122830--the glove box and door pillar numbers are the same. I may be wrong, but this is how I read the VIN:

K = 4 x 4
E = V8 gas
2 = 3/4 ton
34 = Fleetside

Z = Fremont, CA manufacturing plant
1 = 1971 manufacture date
The rest of the numbers refer to how many were built--specifically, which number this one was.

The model number is KE 25934. I read this as:

K = 4 x 4
E = V8
2 = 5200-7500 GVW
59 = 127" wheelbase (Long bed)
34 = 1970-1972 Fleetside

I'll know more tomorrow because I bought it and I'll drag it home. Yes, I'll provide many pics...

something isn't original, that's all there is to it.
Either the VIN has been swapped, or the frame and or running gear has been swapped

Re: 6 lug wheels on a c20?

I have a 68 3/4 ton that is titled as a 1/2 ton and has 1/2 ton emblems. I am 100% sure it is origional. So I'm sure anything is possible.

i was looking at a 88 3/4 4x4 the other day for a engine and tranny. it had the 14 rear with 6 lug steelies...giving the shape miles and what not id say it was factory(had a 350 with a HM-290(old junk getrag) 5 speed that would break way before a normal 10 bolt...)

Re: 6 lug wheels on a c20?

What throws me off is the fact that the truck looks pretty much unmolested. There are some saddle tanks just behind the rockers and a gun rack inside the cab but that's about it. Otherwise, everything seems original and intact--I have trouble getting my head around the idea that someone somewhere removed and replaced the running gear on an already designated K vehicle.

I ended up giving this deal over to my mechanic--his dad's hot to get ahold of it and restore it, and I'm up to my eyeballs with the Blazer (s). We went over on Thursday to pick it up. Checked the oil, stuck a battery in it, bumped the starter a few times, then poured some gas in the carb. It sputtered and kicked, ran a bit, so we poured the rest of the can in the tank and started it up. Locked in the hubs, stuck in granny and coaxed it out of the hole it'd been living in for 4 years. Drove it up on the trailer and away we went!

The pics will give you all a better idea of what I'm looking at--I'm headed over there in a few minutes, so I'll post it on this thread--or should I post a new thread? Prolly a new one...
