OD 5spd/6spd

Who's done one of these swaps? I know there is the NVG 3500, and they are pricey... but what about T-5... they are plentiful as they came in the camaros, firebirds, s-10, Jeeps, mustangs...

But do they all bolt up to a chevy bellhousing... I think they would... I know some fab with the crossmember and the tuffy would be the clutch and all...

I prefer a stick and since I am not building a race truck with a monster motor here, just not sure if I am looking down the wrong road here... Please someone tell me the skinny or the err of my ways before i get too far into this....

I love a stick myself! The Richmond OD in my longhorn was very pricey, but bolted to the stock bellhousing, & runs the same slipyolk as a 400 turbo. The trans is within a fraction of an inch for lenght as compaired to the old 400T(no driveline mods). with a 3.40 gear, on a 29" tire, pullin a .76 OD ratio, that old truck is flat @ss out of speedo @ 3000 rpms on the open road....overdrive rocks L

yeah i am sure it rocks, but can't justify the $$$ for this tired old truck at the moment... I am on a cheap beer pocketbook on this project... 40 oz pocketbook is more like it...

Amen! I understand about the pocketbook......the bank just seemed to have more money than me.....yes I will be paying for that trans swap for a while at any rate, there are a few options aftermarket(none are very cheap), but a few will bolt the stock bell. Tr 3550/TKO 5 spd is another that I looked at. there is also a retrofit t56, that fits the stock bell....double overdrive. the last 2 trannies will be needing driveshaft mods, but are about $1000 cheaper than the Richmond. the T5 trans is a problem , from a strength standpoint, & the others stockers wont bolt a stock (67-72) bell. I am sure there are other options......& hopefully some cheaper options. 69L

I went the t5 route. My 6 doesnt have a lot of horses, the swap was cheap and easy,and I havent had a problem in 7 years. Love the o/d ! Did have to shorten the driveshaft, new clutch, but it all lined up just fine.

i agree with the t5 swap. i have been running a t5 behind a 300hp 350 for 5 years with no problems. just use everything from doner car. bellhousing and hydraulic clutch. just make sure it is from a v8 engine. the s10 t5 is weaker than the camaro/firebird.

has anyone done the nv 4500 swap? i am looking at that for my gmc because i still want a decent low gear with an over drive.

That is what I was wondering... Thats about the setup I am shooting for... glad its been no problems and hats another reason I love sticks... now to keep my eyes open

I havent had a chance to check the mileage, since I swapped the rear gears, but she was getting 10-11 mpg with the 4.10 + overdrive. when fuel hit $2 gal, I swapped the 3.40 gears back in. it should get better(I hope!) I think a computerized "fuelie" may be the best bet for mileage tho.....69L

I don't think the fuel economy is the issue as It will take tens of thousands to recoup the costs, but here in Ga on the interstate 70mph is the limit but 80-85 is the flow of traffic... The rpms necessary to cruise at that speed is hard on an older engine...

That's why I only drive during rush hour around here.

if you go with a t-5 get the world class t5 because the non world class that came in the s10s will not hold up to anything bigger than a 4.3 v6
