Crossfire Urethane questions

First, I already have the paint so no going back.Single stage urethane. Is there a trick to getting this paint to lay out flat? Seems I either get it to dry or if you wet it just a little more you get runs. Sprayed my hood this morning, 1st coat was ok other than a little orange peel. Second coat, runs on every corner. If I try to move any faster it dont get enough paint and looks dry or peeley. Had the same problem when I done the fenders and the cab. I use a spray gun almost daily in my business so I know how to spray, just not this product apparently. Thanks for any tips.

Re: Crossfire Urethane questions

What does the manufacturer's technical data sheet suggest?

I got the 5.0 crossfire gold and the sheet for it. 8.4.1 mix. followed to the tee. Calls for 8 to 10 psi at the tip for hvlp. It wont hardly spit that low.

How are you measuring the pressure at the tip? I don't know many people who have the thing that fits over the end of the gun.

Re: Crossfire Urethane questions

Don't bother paying attention to that cap pressure. Set the gun regulator pressure at about 25-27 psi. I have sprayed this product, along with most other MS product. Laying down a lighter mist coat followed by 2 medium coats will get a more uniform and gloss look. The heavier you spray on the last coat the more the paint will flow out, but don't risk running the paint. I'm the store manager at the local NAPA Paint Store FWIW.

Im not measuring at the tip. Thats just what the sheet calls for . I have a regulator on the gun set at 25. When you pull trigger that cuts in half.

Before putting fluid in the cup, give the trigger full pull or after the point the gun transfers from spraying air to fluid. Then maintain regulator at 25psi under what would be fluid load.

Re: Crossfire Urethane questions

Thanks Guys. I stepped away from it for today ,lol. Gonna sand runs out later and attempt spray again tomorrow. I have sprayed this stuff through 3 different guns with 1.4 tip. I may try the 1.7 and see if that will help.

Always good to step away sometimes! lol. Personally, I would keep working with that 1.4 tip and adjust the fluid flow if you find it is typically too dry also.

Re: Crossfire Urethane questions

What is the air temp and humidity level? What is the temp of the product? Meaning did you have it in a climate controlled place like your utility room or was it in the shop and had it been cold. The reducer and hardner are sensitive to temps as well. I like for my metal temp and material temp and air temp all to be 65 before spraying. Sometimes i have to "help" that with my torpedo type heaters.

70,75 degrees after I heated it up for awhile. Was about 55 when I turned heat on.

Re: Crossfire Urethane questions

so I resprayed the hood this morning. Only a couple small runs but still a bit of orange peel. But I feel there is enough paint on it that can either be buffed out or would you suggest sand slick and top coat with clear. Had I known this paint was gonna be this hard to deal with I would have went b/c. Ive sprayed single stage acrylic enamel with ease but this acrylic urethane is a different animal.lol
