Re: Want to freshen up a tired 350 on the cheap.
If you are doing it yourself make sure everything is marked. I am working on a 79 and nothing is marked, no rod caps and no rods. Remember which side you are working on, odd or even. I believe oil filter side is odd numbers.

Back in 2010/12 I started looking for it. That's when I joined this forum with the username. Someone in these forums suggested I hire a PI. That led me to finding it.

Re: Want to freshen up a tired 350 on the cheap.
If you can swing the father-son part the amount of money will never register.
My Pops had a 68 Malibu and the 283 died. We drug a 307 out of the corner, pulled it down and honed the cylinders with a honer and a drill. We used the heads off the 283. Same pistons, re-ringed and new rods and mains. We too used a kit from Northern and the only up-grade was to Fel-Pro gaskets. (The others were OK but the Northern head gaskets looked weak). New oil pump and a camshaft w/ lifters. This was in the late 80's and I think all the parts were less than $300. We called the '307' a big block 283. LOL Coupled with the 2 speed power slide transmission it was one of the best rides we ever had. It was a cool old car but it was the father-son part that made it worthwhile. Scott |
