HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
I cover a fairly large territory for my job, drive about 45000 miles a year on average. I find lots of things that I think are interesting, cool or just catches my eye. I'm going to just post some random stuff up from my time on the road. If anyone wants to share their own pics of what they find please do.
A pair of Lincolns. Army truck, Little Falls is close to Camp Ripley which is MN main national guard base. Gotta love classic COE's. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
Was driving through Grey Eagle and saw this big dark blue car that had obviously just been pulled out of storage. I turned around and went back for a closer look. It was a 63 Pontiac Grand Prix. Original paint and interior. Real solid car. Talked to the owner for about 20 min. The car came from Alabama several years ago. He was the 3rd owner. Says he pulls it out, starts it up, cleans it and drives it once or twice a year.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
This has the makings of a very interesting thread. The above pics of the '63 Pontiac bring back memories.... my Grandfather bought a new '64 Bonneville in dark blue metallic paint.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
I had a 66 Gran Prix once. Didn't have it for long though. It was a hundred dollar special, and it didn't last too long. Didn't even run long enough to make it to the demo derby

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
In 1972 I bought a 65 catalina 2+2. It was burgundy metallic with a black interior. It had a 421 engine that would move that big old car. You couldn't keep oil in it. No leaks, (parked on concrete everyday) and didn't smoke. I chased my tail on it for about 6 months then traded it even for a 64 chevy impala 2 dr ht. 6 with a 3 on the tree. Wish I still had that old car.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
The first car in this thread is a Lincoln I spotted in a fenced in area behind some old steel buildings. There were 2 of them there. The old army truck was in the same yard. This was on the west side of Little Falls where I grew up. Here are a few more of the Lincolns.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
Couple more pics. Love that Pontiac manifold vacuum gauge and the way the heater controls and radio match styles. That's an original AM/FM radio from 1963. The truck I came across in Long Prairie in May. I think it was a NDSU campus truck in its earlier life. The little car was a barn find that someone brought into an import repair shop to get running. Not restored.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
Last week I went through Waterville and stopped to pick up a part for my boat. When I left I saw this beauty parked under a tree by the bowling alley. A Divco I think.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
A couple shots from when I went to the New Ulm autofest. I'm ex navy and just loved this Engine Room tag that was on the hood of some ratrod. I dig old coolers and thought this was cool. Its embossed. Probably a new piece but I liked it.
Then a shot of my truck inside the Fedex depot in Mankato. I was shipping a pair of tailgates that weighed about 115 lbs so they let me drive in to drop off. Found the mobil can at some little shop in Gibbon. Its my new trash can for the garage. The gas pump behind it I got this spring from 1 of the brothers that own Sleepy Eye Auto Salvage. I knew he collected pumps and restored them. I was looking for a 60s to 70s style pump to fit the era of cars I like and asked him to keep an eye out for me. He called me a few weeks later to say he had 1 to sell because he wanted to get another old visible pump to put in front of his garage in its place. $350 and its a fully operational pump. Just needs a new glass on 1 side. Its a Wayne 420 (stoners will dig it) from 1968 I think. And that cool old jack is at the body shop here in Sleepy Eye where I hang out sometimes. The shop was originally a gas station. Webb brand which was a smaller less known brand. Then grandpa started servicing cars. Then started doing paint and body work. Now its Mathiowetz Auto Body. The jack has been there for longer than the current brothers running it can remember. I told them to paint it up and stripe it. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
An old service station in Watson. Never heard of Tydol gas before. Looks like its just a repair shop now, or maybe the guy is just a damn lucky hobbiest that bought an old service station to do his work in. I know I've thought about doing it. There is one in town here that would work and has been for sale, but it needs a lot of work and is at the main crossroads here of MN hwy 4 and US hwy 14. Busy corner, at least compared to to others in town.

Couple more from Watson.
A restored sign on a building in Little Falls. A better pic of my gas pump. The guy I bought it from is a Harley guy. I will be repainting it to Mobil colors and stick a pegasus on it. Posted via Mobile Device

Lots of cool stuff along Americas highways and backroads. Oddly enough I like this old floor jack pic the best. I would love to own one.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
A VW shop with its own private VW salvage yard. This is in Benson. The Camaro is kind of out of place here. I've been on the look out for a Manx style dune buggy project. If anyone knows of a good deal on one, PM me.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
Crowders service station in Little Falls. Crowders has been there my whole life. I remember my dad stopping there for gas and bait in my truck when I was real little. It's still in business and just runs day time hours. Still using the same old pumps. Gotta love that air pump in the last pic. Whens the last time you ever saw one in operation?

Continuing with the phone dump. I had to stop at a body shop in Lakeville. One of the very few that still does restorations. Just some random pics here.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
Cool pics. The Little red car is an "Isetta" I had a buddy right after HS that had one.Real underpowered but like 35 mpg.Strangely enough, almost all were fitted with sunroofs. That was so there was a second exit in case of accident. The main entrance/exit was the door(singular) that opened the whole front of the car including the steering wheel.

About 60 miles north of Iowa border, and 80 miles west of I-35. My territory is the southern 2/3 of MN and north central IA. With occasional trips outside that for special work.

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
It's good to see that America has not changed much in some areas of the country. I travel to Maine occasionally to remember what it was like when I was young and living up there. Too much of this has sadly gone by the wayside.
Thanks for posting pictures of this wonderful area!

Re: HG's thread of miscelaneous stuff
I've stayed in Stillwater a few times and its a great little tourist town on the St Croix river. One spring recently I was there when the ice was still on the river, but the water was past flood stage. Kind of a weird combo. Here's what a park building on the river looked like at night...
Here it is the next morning. You can see the ice in the background. Here is the Mississippi spring of 2012, in Onalaska, WI, looking west to MN. I guess Onalaska is proud of their sunfish... This is the bridge into LaCrosse on US Hwy 14. I just think these old steel bridges look cool. And if you ever go to LaCrosse you have to see the worlds largest 6 pack... Another interesting site going into LaCrosse in the winter is the frozen cliff side water leaks along I-90. The hill seeps water out, can't really call it a waterfall. More like leaks between the rocks of the cliffs from springs. Being MN and kinda cold, it freezes and builds up until they get quite large.
