Auto Floor Shifters

I have run into a dilemma. The PO took off the column shifter and bolted in a cheap floor shifter with no safety catch. You just push it and it goes into the nearest gear. Not so bad if it were a manual transmission. This has made my automatic shifter truly automatic. I have searched summit, hurst, etc and can't seem to find the right shifter for one of our trucks, everything seems "geared" for cars. I love the Locar models, but that just won't fit into my design for a semi-classic (mid '70s) style hot rod.
Does anyone have any sane suggestions as to what I should be looking for in terms of the type/model of auto shifter? I have a 700R auto hooked to a 350 (1986 vintage).

BTW, I did search the threads but couldn't find what I needed.

Re: Auto Floor Shifters

Why do you say the Lokar shifters don't fit the 70's vintage? I had a 23" shifter in mine before and it looked pretty cool. It was one of the biggest conversation pieces of the truck. Most people thought it had a manual tranny in it. Alot of it has to do with the knob you get for it. Mine had the mushroom knob, but the 8-ball knob would look vintage.

That's what mine has and it's good for a floor shift. I'm getting a smaller shifter when I get my center console all built though. Think I'm going with the B&M Hammer shifter.

Re: Auto Floor Shifters

68Shortbed, you are right. It looks real nice. I looked at a bunch of them and I think Lokar is going to be it. I will tell the wife to look the other way when I click "buy". Kinda spendy, but you get what you pay for. I really like the 8-ball look, but I may re-think my interior design scheme looking at the machined shift knob!

Choices, choices, choices.

I don't know if they have updated their shifters but you get only one switch. Either nuetal saftey or reverse lights but, not both.

Re: Auto Floor Shifters

Make sure the length fits the look you are after. I installed the 23" Lokar shown in 68Stepbed's photo. It was way too long for my taste. As you can see in his photo, the shifter knob is above the radio and almost goes above the dash line. Felt like I was in an 18 wheeler. I took it out and returned it to Summit for the same shifter in 16". That should put the shift know down by the vent controls.

Yes it had a neutral safety switch, but I never wired it.

Mine had hook ups for both, but I didn't have reverse lights, so.......

You're right, the length makes a big difference. The 23" shifter happened to look good with the theme I had going. It was a tad tall though. I was gonna swap it for the 16" when I restored it, but decided to go with column shift for a cleaner look instead.
