Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

I'm looking to build a year round daily driver and for me that means 4wd is a must. I've considered a ZR2 swap but have looked for the past year with no luck finding one anywhere near me. I don't know if a 4x4 dakota would fit. Which brings me to why I'm posting this.... anyone know if a 2000-2006 Tahoe or Yukon chassis has been swapped under an advanced design truck? The wheelbase is dead on 116". I know the track width is a little wide but with different back spacing and a little widening of the fenders I can't say that would deter me either. I've searched and can't find any info on anyone doing a build. I came across 2 pics on the internet which got me thinking in the first place on this but they don't have any info on the build at all, ust says its on a Tahoe.

This is kinda long winded, sorry 😞 Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

There have been a number of two wheel drive Dakota swaps done, Width with them is good.

Steve at www.industrialchassis.com has done at least one two wheel drive Dakota swap.

Wheelbases run :
Dimensions
111.9 in (2,842 mm) (reg. short)
123.9 in (3,147 mm) (reg. long)
131.0 in (3,327 mm) (ext. cab)

That would mean you would have to do some work to get 116 for a short bed or 125-1/4 for a long bed.

Rich at Purple Monkey Kustoms in Florida has done a ton of 88/ ?? chassis swaps under AD trucks. They look good in the photos.

there might be a good reason for this good buddy.

there is a project by BBeep in the project section that is a wider donor chassis I think trailblazer, and he widened the front fenders by using 2 ton stuff. nice solution, maybe look at it.

I hear a lot of guys say this about the wheel offset but remember that the 00-06 trucks already have FWD offset, so finding something with MORE offset than that is going to be a problem. if i remember BBeep said this too. and recently there was a tahoe swap on a 55-59, I dont remember his name either but the long and the short of it was it was too wide. you will need SEVERAL INCHES more offset.

I am not sure if Mr48 is suggesting a dakota 4wd but keep in mind that the dakota 4wd (and the s10 4wd for that matter) has torsion bar front suspension. that doesnt mean a lot till you are moving the motor back in the frame to fit a radiator and the transfer case runs into the torsion bar crossmember. you will need a plan for that, if thats the way you go.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

Thanks for the replies. I've seen the 2wd dakotas done but not a 4wd. I'm aware of the torsion bar suspension causing alot of difficulties so that is most likely why I haven't seen one. I remember reading Bbeeps build, but forgot about him using the 2ton fenders. Might be an option. I totally wasn't thinking about the FWD offset! Glad I asked here before I bought a donor. I'm going to do more thinking on this before I scrap the idea. Would be great to have a chassis swap without having to touch it at all (to an extent) and only have to deal with the body. But like was said...probably good reason it hasn't been done.

well i am not trying to discourage you, in fact I love weirdy out-of-the-box stuff. so if you do this, i will be a constant watcher and commenter in your project thread.

but there was a south park a long time ago about the underpants gnomes, where step 1 was collect underpants, step 2 was ???? and step 3 was profit. a lot of times thinking about a build is like that, step 1 is get a tahoe step 2 is ???? and step 3 is drive and enjoy. its the ???? that was the most important, in the episode and with the truck, and you are on your way to a real project by at least asking questions up front. lots of projects are for sale shortly after starting because they dont really turn out like the photoshop rendering, and i dont mean finished projects, I mean pretty immediately its clear its not going to work and without a plan to address it, they punt.

widening fenders may be all you need! or maybe not. the good thing is that you have the problem to solve now before you bought the donors! maybe someone else here has done that as well.

now that I think of it there was a guy here who did a 47-53 on an aviator chassis, which is basically an awd explorer. another one to search up. most guys here would plotz about a ford chassis drivetrain in a chevy, but build what ever you want. I recently got a low mile grand marquis 4.6 and I will be darned if the wheelbase and track width isnt just perfect for my 56 big window chevy. my brother the chevy guy almost threw up when I told him what I was thinking, but he donest have to drive it or even ride in it. yee-haw weirdys.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

Have you looked at the GM Canyon or Colorado trucks? I have not yet noticed a build on these chassis , so maybe it's a no go.These may be an option with a more suitable track width etc.? Just more food for thought. I do not know if they have the limitations Russ has pointed out with the other donors you've considered. I used the first generation 2 wheel drive Dakota which I think worked out well but that is irrelevant considering the desire for 4 wheel drive.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

Having done a full size axle swap on my AD, I would suggest against.. I know it can and has been done..
Like Russ said, if that's what you want, go for it...but it's not gonna be easy..
Do you have shop space and tools, equipment, experience, and help needed to do it, ? Just asking..
The biggest thing I hate about mine is how far the tires and wheels stick out from under the fenders..
But also the donor frame width creates problems, nothing sits like you think it should, mounts wind up over the frame rails, steering issues, mine was man trans, that created problems as well..
Bottom line , I did a tremendous amount of work, only to be disappointed in the end..
I've often wandered if a jeep would make a better donor for a 4wd AD...also a lot of work..
But I'm past wanting my AD as a 4wd, and am in the process of making it back into 2wd.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Really, I mean that. I'm all for the weird and and wacky too. I like the underpants gnomes reference lol.

Yeah its figuring out the ???? that is the problem. A few guys at work have the mindset that anything is doable in one way or another and we all agree that having a plan, sticking to it and finding out as much info and foreseeable problems first is best. It doesn't seem like this has really been done. Other than the 2 pics I came across that seems like it 'kinda fits'. But who knows.

Not giving up on this, just making me think more. I'd sure like to be the guy to say "hold my beer"

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

Sorry, I missed the last posts from edgelycanuck and mongocanfly while I was side tracked during my last post.... anyways....

I'm a ticketed autobody tech with 20yrs experience. Never done a chassis swap but some of the wrecks I've fixed would rival the swap in technicality. I have the tools, and access to the shop space needed. As well as any of the extra help I'd need.

I'd love to go the 2wd route but to make it more worthwhile in the eyes of a certain someone (ie. my wife) and to help keep costs down as well, as I would want the full air ride setup. 4wd is the way to go for me. Not saying a 2wd truck can't be driven in a Saskatchewan winter, but it sure makes life a whole lot easier.

I've never considered the Canyon or Colorado, but I think I remember reading about the frames not being great for a swap. Then again this was back when I was looking at a 2wd s10 swap. A Jeep is an interesting idea. I'm not opposed to putting a jeep or Ford chassis under a chevy at all. I'm not a purist. But not gonna lie, having a 5.3 or 6.0 ls with a 6spd auto and having it come in its own chassis wouldn't hurt my feelings any.

In all honesty I'm beginning to get a little discouraged with this option. But not completely out of my mind yet. Glad I got some info and opinions before I was into it for a bunch of cash and time to be disappointed with it.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

I know what you mean about the whole swap idea....I seriously gave it a lot of thought on my IH build..
The IH was already a 4wd so that part was simple...I used a suburban for the donor axles..and gave a lot of thought about doing a frame swap...the more I measured and the more thought i put into it, and remembering all I went thru with my AD frame swap, I gave up on that idea and stuck with the stock frame...no regrets there..
Sounds like you have capabilities of pulling it off with your background...

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

I wasn't aware of the torsion bars on 4 wheel drive Dakotas either. I have the suspension parts off a 92 Dakota two wheel drive that I bought as a donor truck and pulled the suspension and rack and pinion off and sold the hulk to the wrecking yard. I don't ever remember being under a 4 wheel drive Dakota. Torsion bars quite often are the bunk if you plan on engine swaps out of the norm for that vehicle.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

GM did an AD suburban on a TBSS chassis that turned out pretty cool. They didn’t widen the fenders for that. Also, I wouldn’t worry about the torsion bars on the 4wd S-10 chassis. It’s pretty easy to do a coil over setup on those. And since they have a more normal control arm orientation, rack and pinion steering isnt too terrible of a job. Then you could run an uncut core support.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

looks like he used bbeeps fender trick, those are ~2" wider front and rear, you can see the added space at the headlight/grille.

there you go suedespade, thats what it would look like with widened fenders and lowered.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

I don’t know how the newer chassis work, but I used an ’88 k2500 for my ’47 panel. I like torsion bars and left the engine alone, but I did have a custom radiator built. The gas filler was moved to the driver’s side. This has the driver side diff and the exhaust is on the passenger side. I’m happy with how the wheels sit in the openings. I took a bunch of measurements and figured out how things line up before starting the project.

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

If you're still considering different ideas, I'd suggest looking into using a Toyota chassis. I'd start with an IFS version from around 93-95. Folks are often surprised at how many dimensions on older Toyota trucks suggest the original engineering involved measuring GM parts. :-)

Re: Advanced Design on 00-06 Tahoe/Yukon chassis?

2010 gmc canyon specs are in here, around the page 20 area and forward. looks like track width is around 60" from center to center of the stock wheel. wheelbase is 111 or 125". frame is a lot like any newer style struck with a kick up for the front and rear suspensions. they did come with a 5.3 v8 from 09-12 I think. best to purchase a complete truck so you get all the things you need and then sell off the extra body parts etc to help pay for the purchase.
just a thought. seem close to the right width? wheelbase is changeable with some frame work.

Are you looking for the jacked up 4x4 look or would AWD work? Here is a truck using the Explorer chassis which appears to fit well. The owner did not choose to use the front differential but in the video he discusses that option.
