gear box ripping out

Hi all,

I have a 90 burb with a sagina gear box. The bolts have ripped through the frame.

any way to fix this? is there a reinforcement plate or something I can purchase?

Re: gear box ripping out

I would approach this as a two-step fix. First is to weld up your frame using one of the repair plates that mongocanfly mentioned. The second step, is to install a brace kit like getter-done mentioned. This brace kit helps stabilize the box by bracing it back to a crossmember, and makes it less likely to break the frame again.

If you're wanting to hire the whole job out, find a local mechanic who's comfortable with welding and fabrication work. Buy the repair plate and the steering box brace, and have the mechanic install them. I would expect the repair to take anywhere from three to six hours. He'd have to remove the driver's side wheel, unbolt the steering box, clean up the frame, weld in the new plate, bolt in the brace, and reinstall the steering box.

Re: gear box ripping out

The plate linked is a 'reinforcing plate'. That means you have to repair the frame first, then install the plate. Repairing the frame means removing the box and getting all the pieces you can back into place and welding them, then smoothing it all out front and back. Then you put the plate in and start all over again molding the plate to the frame with a rosebud torch end. I've done probably a couple dozen of these repairs in both 2wd and 4wd. I've even had to replace that section of frame back to the center body mount a couple of times. It is pretty labor intensive.

Re: gear box ripping out

Use Offroad designs plates and brace. If there are any cracks make sure to stop drill, and 'v' the crack and weld it up i have used two of their setups and they are quality products.

Re: gear box ripping out

That level of damage i would buy both the weld on repair kit and bolt in brace kit .

Fix the frame first . Stop drill all the cracks . Then bolt the repair plate on nice and tight via the 4 holes the box bolts on with . Stitch weld it like the directions show . Then bolt on the box and brace kit .

With the weld on repair kit and bolt on brace kit you might need longer bolts for the whole sandwich .

And make sure you get a bolt in brace for 2wd . As there didferent over 4wd .
